I've been having crash issues for months now with no solution. I've been able to narrow it down to a windows issue but no solution seems to be available.

At random points during gaming (COD Warzone) the video card driver stops working and then immediately recovers. I get a black screen for around 5-10 seconds and that causes my game to crash. It is extremely frustrating.

I have done clean installs of Windows 10 64bit, tested with both NVidia and AMD GPU's, various video card drivers (up to 1 year old), and various other checks and setting changes.

I'm hoping that someone can please respond to help me figure out what is causing this issue because it is extremely frustrating.

Hey everyone, 

I have finally fixed this issue fixed on my PC. I'm so damn happy 😅

Changing my input from DisplayPort to HDMI resolved it. This fixes the crashing completely, even with two sticks of memory in dual-channel mode at full speed 3200Mhz.

This got me curious, since I saw that using HDMI limits my refresh rate to 100Hz. So, I switched back to DisplayPort but forced it to run at 120Hz instead of the full 144Hz. This also runs flawlessly with dual-channel memory and IMO confirms that 144Hz (combined with certain memory configurations) is somehow the causing the crashes.

I've ordered a new DisplayPort cable to see if it resolves the issue at 144Hz, but even if it doesn't I'll be happy with 120Hz since the 5600XT rarely gets above 120 FPS in games I play at 1440p anyway!

EDIT: Sorry to hear about your new issue Tyler. I am on the latest Window 10 update and AMD drivers (I now have the full AMD Overlay etc installed) and have not run into that problem.

EDIT 2: New DisplayPort cable has the exact same issue at 144Hz. I can live with 120Hz so it's all good and no more crashes :)

    After plugging my flight stick  and headset back into the "USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A ports (AMD® CPU)" I get Driver Timeout in Flight Simulator after 15-30 minutes. Apex Legends doesn't crash though.

    I'll have to do some digging to find out what chipset is linked to what, but in my side mouse and keyboard are connected to the top ones and headset next to Ethernet port.

    When I was crashing, the other devices were connected randomly in the remaining ports.

    EDIT: None of the USB changes worked for me. Changing from 144Hz to 120Hz fixed my crashes. Most of my games run at ~100FPS anyway, so no big deal.

    The USB devices/ports theory seems pretty strong. My last crash was January 3rd - a new record since this started to get real bad in November.

    After doing some homework I found that the rear of my motherboard has the following types of USB ports on the rear panel:

    • Top of real panel: 2x USB 2.0 Type-A ports (AMD® X470 Chipset)
    • Middle of rear panel: 4x USB 3.2 Gen1 Type-A ports (AMD® CPU)
    • Bottom of rear panel: 2x USB 3.2 Gen2 Type-A ports (ASMedia® ASM1143 Chipset)

    Each of these has a different chipset, as noted in the brackets. I've had zero crashes by plugging just my mouse and keyboard into the bottom two ports (ASM1143 Chipset).

    From what I can see both our motherboards use standard AMD Chipset drivers, however the latest version on Gigabyte's website for B450M is 2.09.28.509 (Nov 5 2020), while MSI is on 2.10.26.336 (Dec 11 2020).

    It might not be a chipset thing, it can be 1 faulty peripheral that causes all that (and by faulty it can just be a minor compatibility issue that causes all this), it can also be all GPU related, or it's Windows, or a perfect storm of X,Y and Z...

    Unfortunately we're "just" users with a similar problem and we're doing our best to report a problem, find a source, and hopefully a fix, but without professional support, we're limited. And as in most computer related issues, everybody will say it's not their problem and it's someone else's fault.

    The more we experiment, try with different things plugged in, with different monitors, with different drivers, the closer we'll be to a source, and eventually a solution, but for the moment all we have is this thread, since all other "solutions" found online doesn't work for us.

    I'm like 80% sure this started happening after a Windows update in mid December, and around that time only other thing i did was update GPU drivers two weeks before. At first i thought it's a corrupted driver, but after using ddu 3 times and going back 3 recommended versions of AMD GPU drivers i can't get this fixed. Only thing that changed was that Rocket League crashes after 2 hours instead of 10 minutes. Only guess i have is that something broke in Windows, more specifically, how it loads drivers. But just like you said, it may be a "perfect storm" of everything going wrong at the same time.
