Update 20H2 won't install

Hello!

I noticed my pc needed to update, and clicked update and restart (for whatever reason, update and shutdown wasn't an option, just sleep, shutdown, or update and restart). Part of the way through the update my computer blue screened and restarted. After this, it rolled back what it had installed. When I got back into windows, update 20H2 had not installed, and I noticed that another update, KB4580980, was needed. When I attempted to install, it ran into errors. I restarted my computer, and attempted to install again, and this time despite not showing any errors, after restarting as requested, no update was applied, though update KB4580980 had installed. This time I tried to uninstall any updates I'd made today, but could only remove KB4580980. After restarting, it still won't update, and now KB4580980 won't install either.

I don't want to do any formats to my computer, because re-installing all my apps is annoying, and if a reset that doesn't delete my files doesn't work then I'll have to buy an external hard-drive to backup my data and do a complete format, which I'd also like to avoid.

Anyone have any idea what to do? Thanks for your help.

Try updating to version 20H2 using the Media Creation tool and if it fails let us know.

The fastest way to get the upgrade is through the Media creation tool or ISO file.

    I had massive headaches installing 20H2. In the end I got it to work by:

    • Having the update downloaded and ready to go on a restart.
    • Opening the system configuration utility 'msconfig'
    • Going to the 'services' tab
    • Disabling everything that wasn't Microsoft.
    • Apply and OK, then choose to restart.
    • On restart update finally installed.
    • Just remember to go into msconfig and restart your services with the 'enable all' option and restart again after 20H2 is installed.

    Hope this helps someone, it was driving me nuts!

    yes i used vipre security many years ago.  but when i updated to Windows 10, i installed all of that and only use defender.  Probably 5 years ago when i upgraded to Windows 10.  I have had a lot of win 10 updates between now and that time.
