Update 20H2 won't install

Hello!

I noticed my pc needed to update, and clicked update and restart (for whatever reason, update and shutdown wasn't an option, just sleep, shutdown, or update and restart). Part of the way through the update my computer blue screened and restarted. After this, it rolled back what it had installed. When I got back into windows, update 20H2 had not installed, and I noticed that another update, KB4580980, was needed. When I attempted to install, it ran into errors. I restarted my computer, and attempted to install again, and this time despite not showing any errors, after restarting as requested, no update was applied, though update KB4580980 had installed. This time I tried to uninstall any updates I'd made today, but could only remove KB4580980. After restarting, it still won't update, and now KB4580980 won't install either.

I don't want to do any formats to my computer, because re-installing all my apps is annoying, and if a reset that doesn't delete my files doesn't work then I'll have to buy an external hard-drive to backup my data and do a complete format, which I'd also like to avoid.

Anyone have any idea what to do? Thanks for your help.

Try updating to version 20H2 using the Media Creation tool and if it fails let us know.

The fastest way to get the upgrade is through the Media creation tool or ISO file.

Please download Media Creation Tool from the link below and select Upgrade this PC at the first screen.

    In my case, I tried all suggestions. In the end I got Windows Update working again after removing Norton360.

    Hi Sumit,

    I tried using the MCT and ISO file. It install the package, run it and restart the computer. After the last restart, message appears "Undoing changes made to your computer".

    So it's running old version (1703). Do you know why its' not upgrading it successfully?

    Other information - PC is proprietary to DELL and running an application supplied by third party vendor.

    Please check and provide assistance. Thanks a lot

    Hi!

    I also encountered the same problem. Tried using media creation tool but on the last step it displays that I can only choose to delete everything, all personal files and apps will be deleted. Can someone tell me how to evade that. I really cant afford to lose my stuff.
