Bluetooth mouse freezes intermittently since the May Windows 10 (ver. 2004) update

Ever since this update my Bluetooth mouse continues to freeze for a few seconds intermittently. I own a Microsoft Designer Bluetooth Mouse and

Microsoft Modern Bluetooth Mouse and the problem exists with both. Tried a Logitech Pebble and again, the same issue. I've tried the troubleshooter

  • it solves nothing. Tried to update drivers - nothing. Restarting Bluetooth - doesn't work.

No matter what attempts to resolve this problem I have discovered, they have all failed.

Can someone help me with this?

This is a summary of the Potential solutions I found in this thread. I am not sure which one would work the best or work at all:

DISABLE BLUETOOTH POWER SAVE

Press Windows + X and select Device Manager

There you will find the Bluetooth adapter

Right click the adapter and select Properties

Uncheck "Allow computer to turn off this device to save power"

Click Ok

MOUSE REGISTRY HACK

Add the following keys at this location: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB\VID_8087&PID_0026\5&2816b067&0&10\Device Parameters

"DeviceSelectiveSuspended"=dword:00000000

"SelectiveSuspendEnabled"=dword:00000000

"SelectiveSuspendSupported"=dword:00000000

ENABLE MOUSE POINTER TRAILS

Go to Settings > Mouse

Click "Additional Mouse Options"

Click the "Pointer Options" tab in the resulting dialog box

Check the "Display Pointer Trails" box, you may also want to set the slider to short

Click Ok

DISABLE ENHANCE POINTER PRECISION

Go to Settings > Mouse.

Click the "Additional Mouse Options" option

Click the "Pointer Options" tab in the resulting dialog box

Uncheck the "Enhance pointer precision" box

Click Ok

SCREEN & SLEEP OPTIONS

Press Windows + X and select Power Options

Set the power option to NEVER for screen and sleep

    Folks, update:

    Registry hacks rarely end well. In my case, after spending some time with these registry keys added, the following problems developed: (1) the bluetooth mouse would not reconnect after the computer enters sleep mode. The only things that seem to enable a reconnection were a reboot, removing and re-pairing the mouse, and finally (the easiest solution) turning bluetooth off/on in settings. (2) My apple airpods would connect, but then disconnect spontaneously after 5 to 10 seconds. They became impossible to use for video conferencing, etc.

    I undid the reg hacks, and all seems to be normal for now. I'll cruise with this for awhile to see if either of these problems return to confirm whether this registry change was the culprit (or not).

    THX doronazulay, apparently this worked for me... Dell LAtitude 9520. Microsoft Arc Mouse. I didnt have all the registry keys that they show in the post but I created them and it works great. Hopefully It will stay this way!. Wonderful!!

    Just installed May 11, 2021—KB5003173 and I think it MIGHT have resolved this -- for me anyway.

    Can't be 100% sure until I give it some time. I did have one quick freeze early today but that might have been a matter of waking up Windows after overnight inactivity. 

    The update mentions "Updates security for Bluetooth drivers." This doesn't say it fixes any other Bluetooth issues but it is an update to the Bluetooth driver.

    Here's hoping!

    EDIT:

    I looked at the file list for this update and there are dozens of files whose names start with "bth" Google says these are Bluetooth files. There are also several files with "mouse" in their names.

    Thanks for the tip.

    I think I've forgotten to mention: this is a Dell desktop computer, and I've had everything related to "saving battery power" turned off since I got the machine several years ago. 

    I haven't fiddled with the registry since it looks to me as though these settings are hardware specific, i.e. I don't find the exact key that's mentioned in the message.

    As I said, I'm trying a wired mouse. The first day, I had many freezes, but definitely fewer than before. I had the mouse plugged into a USB 3 jack. Since it's USB 2, I've moved it to a USB 2 jack, and that has cut the freezes even more -- only 2 or 3 yesterday. But they're still there!
