How do i get rid of the yesterday, today stuff in folders

I know this question has been answered before but for some reason some my folders keep going back to the Today, Yesterday etc. format and i like to use large icons and some of my folders are defaulting back to the Details format, they won't stay at what i set them at. is there some way to permanently stop Windows use of this type of folder setup, i'm fed up with having to adjust each and every folder only to have Windows ignore my settings.

Hi, I’m Nicole, I’ll be happy to help you out today.

Try this procedure

Open File Explorer.

Click on the "View" tab in the ribbon menu.

Click on the "Group by" dropdown menu.

Select "None" from the options.

This should disable the grouping of files and folders by date. If you want to apply this setting to all folders, follow these steps:

Open File Explorer.

Click on the "View" tab in the ribbon menu.

Click on "Options" in the right-hand corner of the ribbon.

In the "Folder Options" window that appears, click on the "View" tab.

Scroll down and click on "Apply to Folders" button.

Click "Yes" when prompted to confirm.

This should apply the "None" grouping option to all folders. However, keep in mind that some folders may still have their own unique view settings, which could cause them to display differently. If this happens, you may need to adjust the view settings for those folders individually.

    Thanks, I'll look at this. Not sure how it has been there since windows 7 and I was never affected in Windows 7 or 10. Windows 11 changed all that.

    The annoying change, (grouping being on by default for the Downloads folder), was introduced with Windows 10 1903 in 2019. The behavior of file dialog views not getting reset by "Apply to Folders", goes back to Windows 7, but was less noticed without the grouping being on by default.

    IMO, Microsoft should change the default back to ungrouped, but they have a history of stubbornly sticking with their (bad) decisions. Another example is that the display of file extensions is still off by default.

    NOPE! Does not fix the problem where when opening an App like Word, Excel, or a third party app, when you browse to open a folder you still see the today, yesterday, etc. The windows 11 file explorer is nothing but a piece of $h**. Someone needs to be kicked in the shins really hard, twice, for being stupid.

    Correct. File dialog views, for previously opened folders, will not be updated via the "Apply to Folders" button. It's been that way since Windows 7. For more details and solutions, see:

    Thanks. The right click worked for Group By. I had seen the link you shared but was concerned about downloading and extracting an outside 3rd party software. You know you can't trust anybody these days for things like that.

    I guess you didn't notice that I wrote WinSetView. You can trust it. See the documentation for more details. Also see discussions on tenforums.com and elevenforum.com, for confirmation. Do a general search for "WinSetView" (you can add other keywords to narrow your search, such as "reddit", "tenforums", "elevenforum", etc.) to find many postings about it.

    Most 3rd party software is trustworthy. You just have to do a little research to ensure you're getting it from a trustworthy site (and it's best practice to get it from the developer's site). Avoid software found via infomercial style web sites or ads disguised as tech blogs. Look for software that has a good reputation and look for transparency (e.g. source code on GitHub, developer easily identified).

    And understand that AV software will throw false positives. For example, Nirsoft has been around forever, his software is excellent, totally clean, and does what it says and no more, but AV software often falsely flags it as "malicious". Such is the difficulty in trying to give users handy utilities these days.
