How to disable efficiency mode in task manager? Windows efficiency mode is making apps like Google Chrome unusable.

Task manager on my windows desktop  says that efficiency mode is active for several but not all sub-processes of google chrome and I believe that is the reason for the drop in performance.

I am able to disable efficiency mode for each individual sub-process, but *it returns a few minutes later. I cannot permanently disable it.*Simple actions such as changing a tab or moving the window causes it to freeze for several minutes. 

  • I have no recent or current updates to install. Everything is up to date.- There are no other demanding processes / apps running on my pc- I have tried altering Chrome's performance and memory settings. Nothing changed.- This problem is the same with Edge and some other applications.- Efficiency mode is greyed out for the entire application. Only certain sub-processes of chrome are in efficiency mode.

The only difference between yesterday and today, is that efficiency mode is active non-stop.

I do not want efficiency mode running at all for google chrome as it is the main browser I use for work and school.

    I found the solution.
    Right-click on the Chrome shortcut on desktop > Properties > Target: hier add this command line after the destination:

    --disable-features=UseEcoQoSForBackgroundProcess

    It should look like this:
    "C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" --disable-features=UseEcoQoSForBackgroundProcess

    It is importnant to put space between the destination and the command line.

    It will work without the efficiency mode!

    Yeah I think this is part of the microsofts efficiency feature things that would really need a settings menu where you could disable it overall or select apps to be exluded from the power savings etc..

    For the Chrome issue I think it was enough to append to the shortcut target: --disable-features=UseEcoQoSForBackgroundProcess and haven't seen the efficiency thing since for chrome

    Not sure if this applies to other programs as well, mostly it was bothering me while using chrome with other programs and it kept turning off videos and such when they weren't in active apps since I was just listening to things while casual gaming etc.

    Hope this helps anyone else facing the issue.

    I can confirm that this "feature" is present (on my desktop at least) for Chrome, Brave and Edge. I NEVER use Edge, but fired it up this morning in hopes I could get some work done. I use Brave exclusively, but started seeing this behavior yesterday. So doesn't appear to be an effort by Microsoft to pull folks to using its browser, but something else is at play.
