How to disable efficiency mode in task manager? Windows efficiency mode is making apps like Google Chrome unusable.

Task manager on my windows desktop  says that efficiency mode is active for several but not all sub-processes of google chrome and I believe that is the reason for the drop in performance.

I am able to disable efficiency mode for each individual sub-process, but *it returns a few minutes later. I cannot permanently disable it.*Simple actions such as changing a tab or moving the window causes it to freeze for several minutes. 

  • I have no recent or current updates to install. Everything is up to date.- There are no other demanding processes / apps running on my pc- I have tried altering Chrome's performance and memory settings. Nothing changed.- This problem is the same with Edge and some other applications.- Efficiency mode is greyed out for the entire application. Only certain sub-processes of chrome are in efficiency mode.

The only difference between yesterday and today, is that efficiency mode is active non-stop.

I do not want efficiency mode running at all for google chrome as it is the main browser I use for work and school.

    To provide some clarity here.

    Google Chrome has opted to use EcoQoS APIs more info here Introducing EcoQoS - Performance and Diagnostics (microsoft.com) which in turn puts it in Efficiency mode and that shows the status in Task Manager.

    Windows 11 only puts it in Efficiency mode when developers have opted to use the APIs. If you are seeing performance issues then you need to contact the Google Chrome dev team and ask to investigate the issue. There could be a possibility of them using it incorrectly or they still need to fine-tune their code to work effectively with EcoQoS.

    Not to sway folks away from Chrome, but there are many Microsoft apps using EcoQoS including Microsoft Edge (which is based on Chromium codebase) without any performance issues.

    Task Manager is just the messenger (dont shoot it :) )

    Although chrome is still running in e-mode, I just updated chrome this AM to ver.

    Version 114.0.5735.199 (Official Build) (64-bit)

    and it is running much better thus far, win11...

    So annoying! We don't actually need effiency mode!

    Go to chrome.exe file location and in properties go to compatibility tab :

    → change the mode to run it in compatibility mode for Windows 8

    → confirm with "Change settings for all users"

    → apply ...

    ... sad thing to do this on Win11 machine, but this got rid of Efficiency mode for Chrome on my system !

    Only thing this did was break chrome all together for me, win11pro updated.

    Personally I don't care if processes are still running in efficiency mode as long as the browser performance is normal again.....

Update: this appears to have resolved my issue in chrome, 9 tabs open and all refresh in a timely manner.
In task mgr. I see 40 processes under chrome all but a few have the 'efficiency mode' icon enabled and when I close the tree and rt. click on the root program, the efficiency mode option is greyed out, unable to disable.

Update 2:
The normal response time was short lived, after about an hour I went back to browse/refresh some of the tabs that I had opened originally and the same long delays are back again.
Whatever's going on has something to do with apps running in 'efficiency mode'.
Sure the apps use far less memory but the performance hit is overwhelming, feels like I'm running on a 486 cpu.
The current inability to disable an app running in 'efficiency mode' is a huge problem, especially for browsers.

Perhaps the upcoming June update will see improvement?
Sure would be nice if someone from MS could chime in here.....
