How to disable efficiency mode in task manager? Windows efficiency mode is making apps like Google Chrome unusable.

Task manager on my windows desktop  says that efficiency mode is active for several but not all sub-processes of google chrome and I believe that is the reason for the drop in performance.

I am able to disable efficiency mode for each individual sub-process, but *it returns a few minutes later. I cannot permanently disable it.*Simple actions such as changing a tab or moving the window causes it to freeze for several minutes. 

  • I have no recent or current updates to install. Everything is up to date.- There are no other demanding processes / apps running on my pc- I have tried altering Chrome's performance and memory settings. Nothing changed.- This problem is the same with Edge and some other applications.- Efficiency mode is greyed out for the entire application. Only certain sub-processes of chrome are in efficiency mode.

The only difference between yesterday and today, is that efficiency mode is active non-stop.

I do not want efficiency mode running at all for google chrome as it is the main browser I use for work and school.

    Fix that does not fix bug, but makes system at least run.

    Only way I got chrome to not lag was to remove the "Graphics Preference" I had it on my external E-GPU. Now it is defaulting to my internal CPU GPU. and the 3D graphics effects such as google earth is slow as integrated CPU GPU is slow. Otherwise now computer works....

    Microsoft has something broken.

    The problem is rooted in the EcoQOS feature in windows. Developers of apps can call a windows API and opt in to have their application use reduce resources when not needed.

    I have not yet found a way to turn it off in reg but have tried a registry modification that may work. (This is for Win10 but was related to a similar throttling behaviour.

    1. Start here: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power
    2. Add new key: "PowerThrottling"
    3. Add 32bit DWORD: "PowerThrottlingOff". Set it to 1.

    Update - Following reboot, I still see chrome subprocesses in Efficiency Mode so don't think that reg change worked. Reverting.

    Thanks! When I disabled it you could see the difference instantly finally I can surf the web without any lags!
