We couldn't find a camera compatible with Windows Hello Face

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad T15g Gen 1 running Windows 10 Pro 22H2 64-bit. I am having trouble trying to setup Windows Hello Face.

The initial problem was that the setup proceeded all the way to the phase where it showed my face and was supposed to recognize it, but then nothing happened and the only option available was to cancel the setup. In order to solve that issue I did according to the instructions here https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-hello/facial-recognition-not-working-for-windows-10/0253a932-4313-4536-858d-abebb50bfad9 i.e. removed the camera drivers ("Integrated Camera" and "Integrated IR Camera") and one driver with "Hello" in its name (can't recall the exact name anymore) from Device Manager. The camera drivers appeared back automatically but the Hello driver does not even if I scan for hardware changes.

Now after doing that the Windows Hello Setup does not even start but shows the error message "We couldn't find a camera compatible with Windows Hello Face" (see the screenshot). I contacted Lenovo support and they say the camera is compatible (after all, it showed the video in the setup before I removed the drivers), also the camera cannot be physically broken because no other application has any problems using it. Lenovo's solution would have been to reimage the whole computer, which I obviously cannot do because I have all my vital work related stuff installed in it.

So I'm quite stuck now and afraid to try things arbitrarily as my earlier attempt to do so only made the situation worse. My own guess is this has something to do with the drivers but I don't know where to get drivers that are definitely compatible with my device and will make this work. Help from anyone who understands how this thing works will be highly appreciated. Thank you.

Are the error messages the same as before (like in your initial post "we couldn't find a compatible camera")? Or have the error messages changed at all? That may provide a clue if the error message is different.

Do you have this in your settings/optional feature? If no, then try to install it. If yes, then try to uninstall it. Restart your laptop (not shut down), then reinstall it back.

Unfortunately, I am running out of ideas at this point. Maybe not contacting lenovo tech support, but posting lenovo forum (that is mostly handled by volunteers, not lenovo employees) --- you need a fresh pair of eyes to look at stuff that I missed.

Here's a few direct quotes of what the Lenovo representative said in the previous ticket I had with them about this issue:

    Thank you for the reply.

The reimage would be to factory reset the device with our image, thas correct.

The problem here is that the camera works in all other places except for the Microsoft feature Windows Hello. This camera has IR that cooperate with windows update.

If for some reason after the re-image and after all drivers are updated the issue still persist, then next step would be to replace part.

Right now we don't have so much of an option then test this in order to verify. Please let me know if you will do this anytime soon or if you are going to wait with that option?

I replied saying I cannot re-image and suggested a few other options they ignored, this was their reply:

The Hello drivers are Microsoft's future. You could look further and try to find the KB of that exact driver but for that, you will need to look with Microsoft Support and let them check the OS build.

With a fresh re-image together with a full update of windows and driver update you will likely have the option again.

Please let me know if and when you will proceed with a re-image of the device in order to see if I should close or keep this case open.

I replied back repeating that I cannot re-image and asked whether I got it right that I can only get support for this issue from Microsoft. Their reply:

Is correct that the correct way for getting support with windows hello face recognizing is with Microsoft.

The quotes above may not be their complete replies but they contain the relevant parts. I don't think it makes sense to write them back without doing the re-image first they insist, which I cannot do ('cannot' means there are business reasons preventing me from doing it, not that I didn't know how to do it. Also I think it's not really a solution to factory reset your computer every time you run into a problem.) Also, I don't think their suggestion to replace a part makes sense as there is no issue with any other application that uses the camera.

Please read this message thread, I'm pretty sure there is an answer to every one of your questions. Please only ask questions not yet answered, having this problem is frustrating enough even without having to constantly repeat yourself.

Device manager has 2 options (disable and uninstall). If you have tried the uninstall option, then that's the correct one --- but it didn't work as hope. Try scan for new hardware in device manager.

In the Dell weblink I posted, the accepted answer seemed to be going back the the windows hello sign in option (step 9), pressing that first and then the windows hello face software device gets installed afterward in the device manager (step 10). Try scan for new hardware in device manager afterward.

Unfortunately, we are rapidly running out of possible fixes (short of resetting the computer or reinstalling the OS). But before trying such drastic action, I would suggest that you go back to lenovo and try to see if some fresh eyes can spot a fix. You already have updated the camera firmware and camera driver.

I do believe that there exists a fix that is much less drastic than a complete OS reinstallation. I just don't know it. Show them all the screenshots (before and after driver/firmware updates, all the error codes...).

I agree that it is truly frightening how irresponsibly people here on the forum give advice that can cause serious damage to other users' computers that they depend on for a living.

Regarding your advice to uninstall the 2 cameras, that's something I had tried before but without disabling Bitlocker first. I now disabled it first but the outcome did not change - they got automatically installed back after restart but the installation of windows hello face software device was not triggered.
