Hello. I have two children with Android phones (Samsung S21's). We have used Microsoft Family Safety for a few years and location tracking has worked perfectly until a few weeks ago when it stopped updating their locations.

I looked at every setting on both their phones, making sure all of the recommended location settings, security settings, battery settings were correct. Still couldn't get their location which showed they were both "In the house" when they were actually at school.

I uninstalled the app from both phones and reinstalled it. I followed all of the security prompts for the recommended settings. Both phones started to report their location again.

However... one of my children is on a school trip. Their phone last reported in five hours ago from a service station 250 miles away. They are now at their destination, but the Microsoft Family Safety app still shows them where they were five hours ago (extremely worrying for a parent).

Looks like the probkem has happened again. This must be a Microsoft problem What are the chances of both my kids phones stopping reporting their location at exactly the same time?

Come on Microsoft please fix this. Our children are very important to us and the app is called Microsoft "Family Safety".

I have 5 memebers in the family, some of them using the same Xiaomi phones. One of them has location history updated 80+ days ago, one updates as per expectations immediately and the other one not at all. All 3 phones family safety deleted, installed latest version, used exactly the same settings. It is zero stars and given, that I pay for this service signifficant amount of money as subscription since many years, it is completely inacceptable.

Please all impacted rate the app in play store or in apple. If they don't start to fix this most likely very basic small bug, there is no other option that switch to google!

Given, that I rely on this service and would love to be able to track my kids whereabouts on the fly when I work and that gives me the opportunity to be less stressed in my life, in summary: microsoft sucks!

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one with these problems. Our old Z3's weren't updating the location, but we were getting rid of them so I just let it slide. We got new S23s and they update the location once every couple of days it seems like. I don't rely on the feature, but it is nice to have. Hopefully MS can figure it out soon.

I've reached out to @ on twitter and - after the mandatory Did-you-try-this-link - I got the following responses

Got that. We truly appreciate your efforts in resolving the issue. To ensure that we understand it correctly, you were able to apply the correct setting, however after a day, the location shows default is that correct? Upon checking, this is a known issue and our engineers and developer are currently looking into it. We apologize for the incovenience this has caused you

    And:

Thanks for the update. Please know that our engineers are still collecting helpful data to have this corrected the soonest. Kindly provide us your Family safety app version, and the devices that you use as well. Rest assured that an update will be released the soonest. Thank you for your patience.

After not having seen any real acceptance of ownership, from Microsoft, of tracking issue with Family Safety, I decided to update, on the Google Play store, my rating and changed my feedback, to include a skating remark about tracking issues.

Something quite miraculous occurred, I received feedback from Microsoft effectively owning up to this problem and finally saying that they are working on it!

The growing frustration, out on the forums is mostly due to the lack of response from Microsoft on this matter. I would be willing to guess that most people using Family Safety on Android will also have family link also set up, so we are not entirely in the dark about our children's whereabouts.

First let me say I do not work, nor have I ever worked for Microsoft.

Personally, being a developer, I understand the often-overwhelming challenges the development team must overcome to provide a product that will work not simply across a multitude of vendor devices but the many versions and subversions of Android.

The Google Android team is under greater pressure, than ever, to tighten up the security and their product, and therefore it is also well known in developer circles that their incremental patch updates and new versions are constantly breaking things.

I looked at the minimum system requirements for Family Safety and it will work on Android 8.0 and up. So that means the team has to ensure that this app will work on 6+ major , and two minor versions of Android, all with their own tweaks and changes to the security model.

After saying all of that, I don't want anyone to think that I am trying to come off as an apologist for Microsoft, far from it. I am simply empathetic to the team and the difficulties that are often involved in being a developer. But I think people are more willing to be patient when they know what is going on, and bearing your head in the sand and clamping down is not a good policy.
