Windows 11 File Explorer no longer remembers search history; how to reenable?

I agree with everyone! The loss of the ability to have what you searched for show up again that day is a HUGE loss of productivity! It's more than annoying, it's a loss of a necessary function.

I use my computer for work and now I regret ever buying a new computer because there are SO many bugs with Windows 11. File Explorer not even working correctly?? Come on Microsoft. Quit spending time on things like Co Pilot when basic functions are broken!

Out of curiosity, has anyone tried any of the alternative file managers, like explorer++, totalcommander etc? Do any of them have a good search and history? All I really need is a search box next to the address bar, support for bunch of boolean operators like OR and NOT, and history right there on the search box.

It's a frequently asked question and the usual answer is to set the view you like, open Options, View, click Apply to Folders, and repeat for every folder type (General items, Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos, Downloads). However, you will find that this procedure will not update all views, everywhere. In particular, folder views via file open/save dialogs will not get updated.

Microsoft has never provided a procedure or tool to globally change your default folder views, so I wrote one. It's called WinSetView. It's a free, open source, portable tool. It only sets registry entries for your user profile. It doesn't "install" anything or require administrator privileges. However, if you're on a work computer, it's likely to still be a violation of your company's rules to use it, even though it will likely run just fine.
