Math applications not running in Windows 11

Greetings,

I am having a tedious issue with a couple of Math applications on a brand-new Windows 11 desktop. Microsoft Mathematics and MaThType 6.9d show the splash screen but then nothing happens: they do not show up. Net Framework 3.5 is turned on and Windows update does not show anything left to install. Here are the device and Windows specifications.

Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-9100F CPU @ 3.60GHz 3.60 GHz
Installed RAM 8.00 GB
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Pen and touch No pen or touch input is available for this display

Edition Windows 11 Pro
Version 21H2
OS build 22000.1696
Experience Windows Feature Experience Pack 1000.22000.1696.0

On other PCs - both Windows 11 and Windows 10 - I do not have this issue. Because it affects two Math applications, I guess it must be related to a common cause. But what could it be? I'm really stuck if I cannot use them, in particular mathtype.

    Unfortunately, the issue couldn't be pinpointed. But I think the non-English fonts (in the FontSubstitutes key) and fonts in the per-user fonts folder could be an issue. Wondering if the other Windows 11 computers have the same non-English entries in the FontSubstitutes key. No "DLL missing" or "Access denied" errors weren't found in the logs.

    The only difference I can see is in the entry

    "MS Shell Dlg"

    On the PC without issues It is

    "MS Shell Dlg"="MS UI Gothic"

    whereas in the PC with issues it is

    "MS Shell Dlg"="Microsoft Sans Serif"

    I doubt this could be the culprit...

    The above is the Windows default setting, so that's not it.

    You may run these commands to prevent the per-user fonts from loading:

    • reg export "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts" "%temp%\fonts_user.reg"
    • reg delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Fonts" /va /f

    The above key has no values (only a subkey) in a standard Windows installation. It's populated only when a font is installed per user.

    (%temp%\fonts_user.reg is the Undo file to revert to the original setting if required.)

    Wondering if Microsoft Defender AV's Exploit protection is blocking something.

    Other than that, I don't have further clues for now.

    Running WinDbg Preview and loading the executable and watching breakpoints might help.. like this user did. Press F5 after every break and eventually see where it fails.
