Is KB5026372 causing an issue with VPN connections?

We have a number of users that have had recent updates of KB5026372 and this has seemingly stopped their VPNs from connecting (loses connection instantly as soon as VPN connected, no more internet access), we use L2TP/IPsec with pre shared key. We have troubleshooted this with the network team, but nothing has changed and they are confident its not an issue caused by us. I have uninstalled KB5026372 on my machine, which had the issue also and then VPN works. Issue we have here is that our updates are handled automatically and it will pull down the updates again and install. Only solution is to pause updates for a set period of time in the hope that this gets resolved in a future update.

Has anyone else reported these issues? I have seen a few articles online regarding this and slowness of some VPNs after the update (which i had before it eventually just stopped working), but no solution other than uninstall.

I’m sorry that you are experiencing this issue. Yes, many users have been reports of VPN connection issues after installing KB5026372. The update is causing problems with VPN connections, especially L2TP/IPSec VPNs.

If your updates are handled automatically, and it will pull down the updates again and install, you can pause updates for a set period in the hope that this gets resolved in a future update.

Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update to pause Windows Update. You can click Pause updates for seven days to block updates for a week; extending this time by clicking again later is possible.

    after i create this values in registry, workaround propose by MSFT, the updates are stopped (for 30 days) and the kb no longer install again:

    powershell.exe New-Item -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate' -Force

    powershell.exe Set-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate' -Name DeferQualityUpdatesPeriodInDays -Value 30 -Force

    powershell.exe Set-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate' -Name DeferQualityUpdates -Value 1 -Force

    This is the solution tested and implemented by me (uninstall_kb5026372.cmd):

    chcp 65001

    taskkill /F /FI "SERVICES eq wuauserv"

    taskkill /F /IM wusa.exe

    net stop wuauserv

    sc config "wuauserv" start=disabled

    powershell.exe Remove-WindowsPackage -Online -PackageName "Package_for_RollupFix~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~22621.1702.1.9" -NoRestart

    powershell.exe New-Item -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate' -Force

    powershell.exe Set-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate' -Name DeferQualityUpdatesPeriodInDays -Value 30 -Force

    powershell.exe Set-ItemProperty -Path 'HKLM:\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate' -Name DeferQualityUpdates -Value 1 -Force

    shutdown /r /t 600 /c "Your equipment will be restart, automatically, in 10 minutes (you can do it manually). Before, you must SAVE your work!"

    Is there a permanent fix for this issue yet? Going on 4 weeks...I can't continue to pause all updates for my organization.

    Hello, can I get help from anyone on removing update KB5026372, we have been having VPN issues for weeks now and the update will not uninstall. No way to remove it and it doesnt show up on the list of updates that can be removed. HELP!!!

    I couldn't find the PackageName but I've disabled the windows update service for now.

    This also means I won't get defender updates. :-(
