Windows 11 folder keeps reverting back to read only

I don't know if this helps anyone, but it seemed to fix my issue with this exact same thing.

I have a project file for a 3D software (Unreal Engine) on an external SSD, which I have used to be able to work on the project remotely. When I have worked on the same project on my main PC, with the project on my main drive, I can save and modify the project file as expected. When I put the project on the external SSD, and then tried to save the project after working for a while, the software would simply freeze, with no error message being displayed. I would have to force quit the program, and the changes I made wouldn't be saved.

After trying everything I could find online, I decided it might be best to start from square one and format the drive. I had originally formatted it as exFAT, but when I formatted it this time, I changed it to NTFS. I had never noticed this before, but when it was exFAT, I had no Security tab in Properties, and I couldn't seem to change any permissions for the drive. When it was NTFS, I had all those options available.

I went into properties, enabled all permissions for all users, and then copied my project onto the drive again. I just worked in it for a minute, making some definite changes, and I was able to save the project file as normal, while working off that drive. :)

How are you determining that the file is read-only? Are you checking its properties? Are you seeing an error message?

Yep, that was my original post and yet every so called tech beats around the bush and cannot give a straight answer.

When you try to edit said document it pops up that you can't as it's in READ ONLY. Then you go to change it by unchecking the box and it reverts back to READ ONLY.

Hi Pete,

I went back and read through your posts and my replies. If I'm not mistaken, your issue is with Office documents getting locked out as read-only on shared network folders. That's an Office and/or network issue that may be a bug in Office. I provided links to every discussion I could find on that issue in one of my previous replies.

If you right-click and select properties on one of those Office documents that's causing a read-only error, has the file's attribute actually been changed to read-only? I expect not. I would expect the read-only error is because Office thinks another user has the file open.

If the file's read-only attribute is not set to read-only, then unchecking read-only for the entire folder where it resides will also have no effect on the issue. Is that the "box" you are referring to?

If the file's attribute is actually getting set to read-only (i.e. the "read-only" box beside "Attributes" for the file, not the folder) then it must be determined what process is changing that attribute. I doubt that's happening, but let's check and find out for sure.
