How to stop Windows 11 updates forever?

I've noticed there is no option to stop windows updates: There is only a nonsensical pause option. Even though I set updates to OFF it still updates after some time which is totally not what I need. The thing is my hard ware is really old and I can't risk new updates like the one I got now totally screwed my machine, I can't run any programs anymore they take forever to open now. Please help how do I stop these updates from happening?

I am Ivan, I will help you with this.

You can deactivate the windows update service directly in services .msc, but when deactivating the microsft store system, among others, they stop working without automatic updating.

01: for this, press the shortcut 'Windows + R' and type "services.msc".

02: right-click on “Windows Update” and then go to “Properties”;

03: under “Startup type”, as in the example below, choose the “Disabled” option from the drop-down menu and click “Apply”.

04: finally, restart your computer to complete the procedure and ensure that the search for new updates is disabled.

Caution when disabling windows update is a security risk at your own risk.

    Totally agree about the smart appliances....terrible technology. Too many points of failure. Great for the manufacturers; awful for the consumers.

    We have a OneControl panel on our RV that runs all the systems on the rig. We are on our third panel in as many years. Constant failure/basic nightmare. Should have known better.....

    So, for anyone looking to disable it fully, follow this. My Windows Updates service and Windows Update tab in settings is fully disabled now.

    Using the Registry Editor

    1. Open Group Policy Editor:
      • Press Win + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter.
    2. Navigate to Windows Update Policies:
      • Go to:

  └── Administrative Templates
      └── Windows Components
          └── Windows Update
    3. Disable Automatic Updates:
      • Locate Configure Automatic Updates.
      • Double-click and set it to Disabled.
      • Click Apply and OK.
    4. Disable Services:
      • Open services.msc:
        • Disable Windows Update Medic Service (WaaSMedicSvc).
        • Disable Windows Update.
        • Disable Update Orchestrator Service.
    5. Modify Registry for WaaSMedicSvc: (To disable service completely)
      • Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WaaSMedicSvc.
      • Set Start value to 4.
    6. Prevent Remediation of Update Services:
      • Navigate to: 
          markdownCopy codeComputer Configuration
  └── Administrative Templates
      └── System
          └── Internet Communication Management
      • Enable Turn off access to all Windows Update features.
    7. Restart the Computer:
      • Restart your computer to ensure all changes take effect.

    (P.S. I am using Windows 11 Pro.)

    I have a pithy response - install unix. It's what I am doing. Add libre office - learn. Microsoft has no lock on applications, just their connection to OEMs

    Dear MS - I get why you do this. But it gets so old, and you ignoring so many reasonable gripes is mind boggling. Pieter - I run the pro version as an independent consultant. I have 3 machines running at the moment - Windows 10 and 11 Pro plus 5 other virtual machines. Microsoft screws me regularly.
