How to stop Windows 11 updates forever?

I've noticed there is no option to stop windows updates: There is only a nonsensical pause option. Even though I set updates to OFF it still updates after some time which is totally not what I need. The thing is my hard ware is really old and I can't risk new updates like the one I got now totally screwed my machine, I can't run any programs anymore they take forever to open now. Please help how do I stop these updates from happening?

I am Ivan, I will help you with this.

You can deactivate the windows update service directly in services .msc, but when deactivating the microsft store system, among others, they stop working without automatic updating.

01: for this, press the shortcut 'Windows + R' and type "services.msc".

02: right-click on “Windows Update” and then go to “Properties”;

03: under “Startup type”, as in the example below, choose the “Disabled” option from the drop-down menu and click “Apply”.

04: finally, restart your computer to complete the procedure and ensure that the search for new updates is disabled.

Caution when disabling windows update is a security risk at your own risk.

    That's correct. Commencing with Windows 10, regular updates are and will be the single most crucial feature of Windows, so they cannot be permanently stopped. Even if you succeed in breaking your operating system - as some have done - so that updating no longer works, Microsoft has built-in tools to restore updating. (The rest of the broken operating system is not Microsoft's responsibility.)

    Totally NOT correct. I have permanently disabled the auto-update from both my Windows 10 and 11 machines. You cannot deactivate the windows update service directly in services .msc as Ivan stated, it will enable itself again that part is true. You can however create group policies that prevent the system from being able to update as well as changing the registry to permanently disable it.

    Yeah, the "answer" is not correct.

    The "Windows Update" service will automatically change back to "manual" and be launched automatically on the next boot.

    You should not rename the svchost.exe. Windows will not boot if it cannot find the file.

    @ Smythius is taken: Could you link to a source on how to do that? I would like try it.

    Windows updates keep making things worse and even broke the OS for me so that I needed to restore a backup.

    This does not work. I have done this multiple times and windows keeps reactivating the service. There has to be more than this to stop the updates. When windows updates it screws up my copy of windows 11 and can't get it to work properly. I have to wipe the drive and reload. My computer is modern and powerful so it is not the problem. I have a 570x pro MB, Ryzen 7 3700x processor, 64 Gb pf DDR4 memory, Radeon 6700x video card and m2 NVME drive running at 5000/4700 download/upload speeds.

    I am getting so pissed with windows I am considering leaving it all together and go to Ubuntu.

    I have Windows 10 on a separate NVME drive and it works fine and I am able to disable the update service and it stays disabled.

    This system does not work for me, I do this 4/5 times but when I restart my computer then starts updating.
