Alt + tab no longer switches to last window in Windows 11

For me, most of the windows can alt-tab back and forth just fine.

But somehow this is not the case for Excel.

When I tried to alt-tab between Excel and another window, it would switch alt-tab between the 1st & 2nd prior windows that I clicked and not the Excel sheet.

I accidentally found a quick temp fix for this.

I minimized the excel that I was working on and opened it again and found alt-tab is stuck to Excel itself.

I then open the window that I want to alt-tab between by clicking on the task bar.

This allowed me to continue alt-tab between my excel and the program that want to alt-tab with.

Not sure if this would work for anyone else but just thought I would share.

With the recent update to 24H2 Alt tab functionality has changed for me.

Specifically, I use Alt+tab while gaming to switch between two instances of a game client.

Since the update to 24H2, this no longer functions, Atl+Tab switches between my current game window and the last non-game window that was open, not between the two game windows as it previously functioned.

To get to the other game window I must now press Alt+(3)tab

I have been thru this thread and tested every option suggested and none of them correct the issue, so I rolled back to the previous Win11 version. Anytime my computer says an update is needed I check, and if 24H2 is in the list I remove it.

Note: When NOT gaming, Alt+tab seems to work fine.

No Option for ' Open Windows'..

One of the most useful shortcuts I use all the time is not working for me on my new laptop with Windows 11. I used to use ALT + TAB to switch between the current window and the last window I used. Now if I use it it switches between the current window and the first open window (not the most recent). How can I get it so it switches between the two most recently used?

I had the same problem and I found that your information is wrong.

Under the System > Multitasking > Show tabs from apps when snapping or pressing Alt + Tab
Use the alternativ "Don't show tabs"
and the problem is solved.

pls make a correction on your solution to help ppl in a correct way.

I was using this for 20 years!! and you changed it without giving us the option to use it as before.
Every new version you screw up something, its unbelievable. Who even came up with this nonsense? I cannot believe this would occur to any developer; the f*is going on there. Im absolutely furious...
