How to fix Windows 11 saying i'm not connected to the internet but apps and browsers connect and work?

Windows 11 update is not working saying "We couldn't connect to the update service. We'll try again later, or you can check now. If it still doesn't work, make sure you're connected to the Internet." (I checked and the windows update service is running), I tried the windows troubleshooter for network and internet and it says "Looks like you aren't connected to the internet." but all apps and browsers connect to internet fine. Today I tried a repair install of the new 23H2 update from the ISO and no luck with that, the troubleshooter and windows update still say no connection to internet. What now?

    Update: The new Dell laptop was a gift. Once at the recipient's location, Windows Update was able to connect and everything seemed to work fine. Unfortunately, I was unable to do much testing due to the chaos of the holidays.

    However, when the problem occurred, the internet connection was going through an edge router lite using DNS servers of 8.8.8.8 and/or 1.1.1.1. The private IP subnet was given out by DHCP in the 10.0.x.x range and a subnet of 255.255.0.0.

    When the problem did NOT occur, the internet connection was going through a TP Link router then a cable modem. Both were using NAT. The modem was 192.168.0.x and 255.255.255.0 and the router was 192.168.1.x and 255.255.255.0 or vice versa. I'm not sure of the DNS servers used. I assume those provided by Optimum cable provider, but will update if or when I find out.

    very naughty as it seems to effect loads of people including me, or is it the old adige, its free so stop complaining, Microsoft are notorious for releasing dodgy Windows and waiting for the boffins out there to fix the problems, totally disgusting.

    I finally resolved this issue after months of troubleshooting. Here’s what I did:

    1. Deleted all files and folders in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.
    2. Downloaded the Windows 11 ISO file, mounted it, and ran the setup file.
    3. Ensured the option to **Keep personal files and apps** was selected during the setup.
