Problem with a windows update KB5031356 (windows 10)

Hello,

I tried to update windows yesterday and ran into some issues, this package : KB5031356 won't install, it downloads it, then it takes some time to install (even though I have a fast NVME SSD) it gets stuck near 20% for a bit, then it goes and goes all the way to 100%, then it gives me this error code : 0x8007000d

Ok so since I know a bit about computers, I have tried a whole bunch of things, also tried to google and look for more fixes, nothing works so far, kind of desperate and I'm affraid I will have to reinstall windows, yet again, it feels like I must do that every year at this point as it always gets corrupted somehow, very strange..

I have tried these classic fixes :

SFC/Scannow

Checkhealth

Scanhealth

Restorehealth

It did find some issues with scannow, which got repaired (supposedly..)

I also tried the troubleshooting apps, as suggested by some websites :

I also had issues when some software crashed on me, discord and as I was trying to update my motherboard software, it crashed and other apps started crashing.. so I restarted

I got the updates for the motherboard software to work and managed to fix discord by deleting the folder in the appdata folder, but this indicates some issues I think

I have also noticed something VERY strange, in task manager, a huge number of my services are simply disactivated, here are some screenshots to give an idea :

I suspect some malware potentially aswell, so I ran a whole bunch of scans..

Windows antivirus, nothing

Microsoft security scanner, nothing

Malwarebytes, nothing

Adwcleaner, only find a minor adware it would seem very harmless according to my research, quarantined

I even tried to run the app called windows repair app (from a trusted website, I shall not mention, don't wanna advertise them but if you look it up you'll see it's legit), it runs a bunch of command and powershell to try to repair things, such as repair the microsoft store etc.

A few weeks ago I did change some settings regarding admin rights, as I wanted to remove the bloatware in windows and I was curious to see what was in the windowsapp folder.. following some instructions on some website, I ran some command to allow admin rights, but I think it allowed more than just windowsapp

I was curious to see because I couldn't even check the size of that folder..

I read on reddit it could cause some issues, I thought, perhaps these guys were really not lucky and honestly didn't think some simple permission settings could break windows.

This was a few weeks ago aswell and I'm pretty sure I ran updates since that happened.

Unfortunatly I couldn't find the blog post anymore that I used, I wanted to revert the permissions (it literally opened a cmd or powershell and ran a whole bunch of commands permissions to allow admin rights)

Perhaps some of you know the command to revert that..

like I said I really hope I won't have to reinstall windows yet again..I feel like I'm being hack because this always happens and it's strange issues like these, maybe I'm being a bit paranoid

Could it just be a broken windows update ?? I googled and didn't find anything indicating this could be the case..

Help would be greatly appreciated.

    It seems this problem's been with us for a long time. Shows how well Microsoft QA works. Once upon a time, it was good, but with Windows 2000 release with, um, well, a lot of stop ship issues, um, maybe 2000 or so (hence Windows 2000), the QA's been poor at best.

    I run my PC with auto updates, scheduled for 3AM because I don't want to sit around waiting while I'm awake. So My PC hasn't completed an update since 19045.3448. I tried to update it myself. I read a lot of posts and tried to make it work, but to no avail. Here's what happened:

    I went into safe mode and deleted all the files and folders in windows\softwaredistribution then rebooted. After booting, the power button did not have "install updates", just Sleep, shutdown, and restart. so I ran windows update. It found 3 things to update, so I picked the first one and it ran fine. Then I picked the second one, KB5031336, and it ran fine. I checked the reporting events, and there were no "failed" entries. Then I hit the "restart now" button. I got the "working on updates. Don't turn off your computer" screen for a long time.

    Then I got the "getting ready to restart your computer" screen. An d the "working on updates " screen again, then the infamous "we couldn't complete the updates undoing changes don't trun off your computer screen.

    After it finally finished booting, looking at the reportingevents log, I have the following failure:

    Looking into the error, it seems there is no fix. The error code is not descriptive enough to offer help, and there are a lot of guesses out there. I read one post where the guy said he installed every incremental KB and still had a couple that he couldn't install. One I think was the Intel drivers.

    but I think it's all hit-or-miss. I think we're just stuck. I don't want to reinstall, I'm afraid I'll lose my apps and data. I keep backups by periodically running Clonezilla. It saved me once on a disk crash.

    Somehow my Windows managed to pass this trouble.. all updates were installed and I get the status You're up to date.

    But there was no KB5031356 on my update history list.

    I agree with others that this is a Microsoft Issue. Having "Wasted" a whole day going through all their repair options (nothing found by the way), this update refuses to install on my AW Gaming Laptop!

    It gets to 96%, throws a wobbly stating there was an error, reboots, undoes all the changes & eventually boots to the login screen.

    Back to the main desktop & the usual "An update is ready to be blah, blah, blah", and welcome to "Groundhog Day"!!

    For the time being, I'm holding fire on the auto updates until they can give us some indications as to a Proper Fix.

    yesterday KB4023057 installed successfully but the other two still failed so just proves that the microsoft downloads that have the errors in KB5031356 and KB5031445 both error code 8007000d.
