Why Does Windows 10/11 Copy and Paste Stop Working After A While?

For the last few months my Copy/Paste will stop working after I've been logged-on for awhile. If I log off and back on (no Restart, though), it will start working again... for awhile, that is. It was happening on Windows 10, so I went ahead and upgraded to Windows 11, hoping it would fix the problem, but it didn't.

I've looked through other postings, but most of them involve a Restart, which certainly works but so does a simple log off/log on. I generally don't log out at the end of the day, just lock it. Does anyone have a solution other than creating a whole new profile?

I feel your pain, LOL, I too have a wife that is willing to make a trade. After working with Dell, who is no help and Microsoft Level 3 for almost 5 months we still don't have a fix. I took my P/C to a specialist who did a TOTAL reformat of the hard drive and reloaded Windows 11 from a USB drive and Office from Microsoft and the P/C worked for 3-days and then failed, cost $135. I can't believe that Dell is allowing P/C's to be sold with these issues. If you read the forum, you will see that a user purchased a new ACER and has the same issues. I have a call scheduled today with Level 3 and will push the issue to get engineering involved as this is unacceptable for people who rely on this function to perform their job.

But when mine goes out, Notepad and any others don't copy/paste, either, so it's not just an Office problem.

Just finished my call with Microsoft Level 3, they cannot recreate the issue in their LAB, they are continuing to work on a fix. I have discovered a work around since copy and paste WILL WORK after a restart for 24 hours. I created a task using the task scheduler to restart the P/C every 24 hours a 5:00 AM. The task will wake up the P/C, perform a restart and I'm good for the day. Hope this helps until they find a fix. I tested this and it does work.

To schedule an automatic reboot for your PC, you can use the Task Scheduler feature in Windows. Here are the steps to set it up:

    1. Press the Windows key to open the Start menu.
    2. Type “Task Scheduler” in the search field and select the corresponding result.
    3. In the Task Scheduler, click on “Create task”.
    4. Provide a descriptive name for the task.
    5. Go to the “Triggers” tab and click “New” to create a new trigger.
    6. Select “On a schedule”, choose the “Daily” radio option, and set the desired time for the reboot.
    7. In the “Actions” tab, click “New”.
    8. Select “Start a program” and enter the following:
      • Program/Script: %SystemRoot%\system32\shutdown.exe
      • Arguments: -r -f -t 10
    9. Optionally, go to the “Conditions” tab and select “Start the task only if the computer is idle” to ensure the system restarts only when idle.
    10. Click “OK” to create the scheduled task.

From now on, your Windows PC will automatically reboot according to the configured schedule. Before restarting, it will display a message, allowing active users to save their work. If you ever want to disable the scheduled restart, simply find the task in Task Scheduler, right-click on it, and select "Disable"
