Why Does Windows 10/11 Copy and Paste Stop Working After A While?

For the last few months my Copy/Paste will stop working after I've been logged-on for awhile. If I log off and back on (no Restart, though), it will start working again... for awhile, that is. It was happening on Windows 10, so I went ahead and upgraded to Windows 11, hoping it would fix the problem, but it didn't.

I've looked through other postings, but most of them involve a Restart, which certainly works but so does a simple log off/log on. I generally don't log out at the end of the day, just lock it. Does anyone have a solution other than creating a whole new profile?

Hi Dean, as I said in my previous replies, I have been working with MicroSoft Level 3 on this issue. I know they are actively working on the issue because I receive weekly updates from the person I'm working with. I did have a problem convincing them they had a problem. I was able to send them links and other emails from other users. To help prioritize the issue we need everybody that is having the issue to submit/open a problem to MicroSoft

MicroSoft does not look at community forums.

Have you tried using the task scheduler to schedule a automatic daily reboot? That worked for me.

Dean, try this simple procedure, it works for me and gets me through the day until a fix is found.

To schedule an automatic reboot for your PC, you can use the Task Scheduler feature in Windows. Here are the steps to set it up:

    1. Press the Windows key to open the Start menu.
    2. Type “Task Scheduler” in the search field and select the corresponding result.
    3. In the Task Scheduler, click on “Create task”.
    4. Provide a descriptive name for the task.
    5. Go to the “Triggers” tab and click “New” to create a new trigger.
    6. Select “On a schedule”, choose the “Daily” radio option, and set the desired time for the reboot.
    7. In the “Actions” tab, click “New”.
    8. Select “Start a program” and enter the following:
      • Program/Script: %SystemRoot%\system32\shutdown.exe
      • Arguments: -r -f -t 10
    9. Optionally, go to the “Conditions” tab and select “Start the task only if the computer is idle” to ensure the system restarts only when idle.
    10. Click “OK” to create the scheduled task.

From now on, your Windows PC will automatically reboot according to the configured schedule. Before restarting, it will display a message, allowing active users to save their work. If you ever want to disable the scheduled restart, simply find the task in Task Scheduler, right-click on it, and select "Disable"

    Hi Kim

i appreciate that, i generally have things open overnight so i wouldn't create a cron to reboot but i appreciate the effort you've put in to help people.

If only microsoft were this useful!

    Dean

Thank you, I've been working with MicroSoft since January. I worked in IT for over 45 years at a large auto manufacture and understand the problem-solving process. It took me a while to convince them they had a big problem. I fully rebuilt my P/C at least 5 times and even took it to a computer repair expert at my expense and still have the problem. I will continue to work with MS until they have a fix, it's just not copy and paste that fails, it's affecting many other Windows features.

    Good Luck, keep in touch.
