How to fix Search bar not working after Windows 11 23H2 update

Hello Jeremy,

I've opened the task manager as recommended. Explorer.exe was not on the task manager list.

It opened with searchbar on top but the search section empty. This getappxpackage did work (with a lot of red text), so now I can use the searchbar again, but the part below the search and above taskbar looks very differently. Why is that, is that because of a windows update? Can I change it?

We have this now on 4 pc's in the office.

Nothing works we can not get any results, even in a folder where there is one document he can not find the document in the search bar.

I hope Microsoft fixes this fast.

I even reinstalled windows on one pc but still nothing helps.

Disabling web search on the search bar resolved the issue for me after none of the other solutions worked.

Alternatively, you might want to find a link that has pictures as this was difficult to follow.

If you are using windows pro or enterprise there is a way to disable we search in the group policy settings, but I cannot comment on whether or not that that resolves this issue.

Easy Fix,

1. Open task Manager.
2. Find the Explorer.exe process.
3. End the Task
4. Run new task
5. explorer.exe

Thank you this fixed it for me on Win 11 24H2 (not sure what cause it to hang with the search)

You can also right click on Windows Explorer in the Task Manager list and select restart to restart Windows Explorer
