Hello, I've been having an issue the past few hours and I cannot figure out how to fix it, Windows keeps asking me for a password and saying my old one is expired. I have been looking for answers on the internet and they all say that the password that windows is asking for is my Microsoft account password but it keeps saying that it's wrong even though I have reset it and used a different one since I'm still logged in on my phone. I made sure to put the right password in when logged in on my phone and that worked but when I boot up my pc and put that same password in it says it's wrong, please if anybody could help me I'm extremely confused.

This advice and much of the advice in this thread, applies to Pro and Enterprise editions and NOT Home edition. Follow the guidance given here and you will be asked to tick boxes or make selections that just DO NOT EXIST in Home edition.

I have been using Home edition for many years, with a Local account NOT a MS account. All of a sudden I'm being prompted to change my password (btw current security thinking is that frequent pw changing is a bad idea but I'll leave you to read up on that). Annoying or what?

Tenforums website seems to have the answer, Option 2. Open a command prompt and issue

    wmic UserAccount set PasswordExpires=False

    described in detail here...

I'm having a similar issue, where every time I log into my laptop and get to my desktop, I get a notification stating my password is about to expire, and to use CTRL+ALT+DEL to change it. I have a roommate who also has Windows 11, and he has NEVER ONCE saw this notification in the many months he's had it. Heck I don't even know what password they r expecting me to change, as I use a PIN (the fingerprint login somehow won't recognize the finger used to make it happen) to log into my laptop upon startup, and haven't needed to change my email password EVER, so I don't know what "password" they would even want!!

Never had an issue with my old Windows 11 being told that my password is going to expire, so I don't know what's going on with this one. HELP!!!

Turning the laptop off then on again simply shows the notification AGAIN, so that won't make it "go away", I do not understand how or why this is happening so telling me to do something I shouldn't have to really do simply because I never had this issue before nor know exactly what is needed to be able to. I do not know what else to do, as even Google was not helpful in the slightest, and this was the only link that seemed like it would provide any support, but at the same time, seems like support was once again not helpful in the slightest, and more and more ppl seem to be having the issue, and unable to receive support in a SUPPORT FORUM, meant to help get ANSWERS FROM MICROSOFT!

i just left the old password line blank and typed in the new password (twice) and it worked!

Someone at Microsoft is not doing their job, methinks!

For anyone who wants to log in:

LEAVE THE BOX SAYING "Password" AS BLANK.

Just put in a new password, type it in in the bottom box saying to confirm password, and click the arrow. If you put in anything in thr top box it'll simply state it's wrong.

Afterwards highly recommend disabling password expiry option.

Just now had a customer who had this problem on his Windows 11 Professional Surface 6 Pro tablet. He had set his password years ago and made it to never expire, (and where he never had to input it on startup) yet this just happened today (13 March 2025) with no rhyme or reason. He just booted-up as he normally does and Windows started trying to make him change a password that he hadn't had to mess with in years, trying to claim that it had 'expired'. Thank God he had it written down and accessible! This problem seems to be ongoing and Microsoft should surely address it. Kudos to the guys here who provided the answer to the problem. My final question is this: Does anybody know what's causing it? The fix is great to have handy, but I'd like to find out what caused the wacky behavior in the 1st place. Somebody at Microsoft has got to be aware of this...
