I gave up and just bought the subscription. Not surprisingly, it works just fine. And even though it says it is a 1 year subscription, it is actually 2 years so a really small price to pay to get rid of this annoyance.

2024-03-31T15:23:34+00:00 Far from scientific, but this morning I really wanted to finish the month so I kept the suggestion about ads in mind. What I found was that if the first ad was 30 seconds, progress would not save. If I got a 5-15 second ad, it would save progress. But I'd exit after a couple of games so that another ad didn't appear, assuming that would mess things up again. Unfortunately, the bulk of the ads were 30 seconds (Go away Roger That), so I had to open/close the game upwards of 15-20 times at a shot to get a short ad.
