When I follow the steps in the Microsoft Store to try to switch out of S mode, all I get is a message:
"Something happened and we couldn't start the upgrade"
and a Try Again button.

None of it works! I know your heart is in the right place, however, this is the personality of this corporation. I'm a kitchen designer and I can't download the design program to work. I'm taking this computer back this morning and I have visions of bill pleasuring himself with it! ****!
This worked for me.
I tried everything everyone recommended multiple times and I am still getting the same error message.
Your experience seems to align with my theory (June 14):
My working theory is that removing S Mode may require the same sort of security as other, usually-paid, license upgrades.
This likely requires certain security files, or certificates, to be valid.
It may be that, for machines that were imaged months or years earlier, carry with them an old, likely expired certificate. That is what blocks the "license change" from initially being executed. However, there may be a process that periodically checks the validity of the security certificates, and if out of date, refreshes them with currently valid replacements. It also seems possible that reinstalling Windows from a recently downloaded ISO file/disk installs currently valid certificates.
So, perhaps there are two ways for this problem to resolve. Out of date certificates that prevent the "OS Change", i.e. Exit S Mode, get replaced with fresher, currently valid certificates using one of two methods:
Hi, I brought a brand new cheap asus vivonotebook, and i'm having the same issue. You have to reinstall windows 11, just google this as I can't remember or just find it on your settings, it's very easy to do. You then just have to wait for windows 11 to download / reinstall (takes long depending on your computer mine is a very weak notebook so took a while but not a crazy amount of time). I then went back onto microsoft store and switched out of S mode in 1 minute :)
I tried more than 10 options and this one worked for me on an HP. Go to System, Recovery, Fix problems using windows update. Took almost 1.5 hours. Restarted and went through the System, Activation process and the GET button worked.
