When I follow the steps in the Microsoft Store to try to switch out of S mode, all I get is a message:

"Something happened and we couldn't start the upgrade"

and a Try Again button.

This also does not work for me. I've tried every step. I've tried to re-install windows. I've wasted hours trying to get a new laptop to work out of the box.

This "S mode" is absolutely stupid. "Hey, Apple is a closed system cult, let's make our system closed so people can't do something as basic as download a competing web browser"

And also lets make it impossible for anyone to actually contact customer service via chat or email to open a case. Nope, now I get to wait forever for someone to call me

Exact same experience as you. Tried everything suggested 3 days ago with no success. Just today, I tried exiting out of S Mode - and it allowed me to. No idea why, probably something the user is not in control of. Such a massive waste of time.
