Well, whoever had that idea, thank you very much.
I went with the ... recovery, fix problem using Windows Update.
Download 36 minutes
Install 95 minutes
System, Activation, Leave S Mode 2 minutes
IT WORKED!

When I follow the steps in the Microsoft Store to try to switch out of S mode, all I get is a message:
"Something happened and we couldn't start the upgrade"
and a Try Again button.

Had the same issue, what finally worked for me was to disable "fast boot", then shutdown, then start back up. After that, the first attempt to switch out of "S mode" succeeded.
Thanks Kevin for describing your experience. I'm glad you got your problem resolved. As for me, none of the remedies in this thread worked until I tried disabling secure boot in the bios. After re-booting I went to the activation tab under settings to try to switch out of S mode and low and behold windows 11 home mode was already enabled! I rebooted to the bios and re-enabled secure boot, re-started to windows and checked the activation window and home mode was still active. problem solved. Hope this method works for others too!
Did it work the next day? Been trying for the better part of 8 hours today still no luck
Hi Kevin,
Have you updated all the apps in Microsoft Store? Open the Store app, click on the Library icon, click on Get Updates to check for available updates then click Update all. Once finished, restart your computer and try switching out of S mode again. If you have a VPN on, temporarily disable it and check if it helps as well. Let me know how it goes.
Thanks.
