The description for Event ID 153 from source nvlddmkm cannot be found

Hello,

I have been plagued by countless annoying random game crashes the past months with my pc with all pointing out to this error (from event viewer) when they occur: "The description for Event ID 153 from source nvlddmkm cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.

If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.

The following information was included with the event: 

\Device\00000092

Reset TDR occurred on GPUID:100

The message resource is present but the message was not found in the message table"

Have tried numerous possible solutions already from forums, but with no luck.. Fortnite and many other games crash after random intervals. Can anyone suggest a solution for this?

My specs are the following:

Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-10400F CPU @ 2.90GHz

Installed RAM G-SKILL F4 3200-C16 32,0 GB DDR4

GPU EVGA GTX 980 Superclocked ACX 2.0

Drives Patriot M.2 P300 512GB and Seagate Hybrid HDD 4TB

Motherboard GIGABYTE H510M H V2

Microsoft Windows 11 Professional (x64) Build 22631.3593 (23H2)

Have to note that i recently replaced almost all parts from the pc due to a previous motherboard burnout which killed many components, expect the PSU (which was repaired by the technician) and GPU (which the technician said was saved from the burnout) and the Hybrid HDD (have this HDD since 2016). Apart from this, i restored my windows partition through Macrium Reflect image backup (from the Hybrid HHD saved backup).

    I experienced this random crashes last Friday (Sep 6th, 2024). First it was just some games, then just by watching stream via Twitch/Youtube. Went through all the suggestions from various sources (reddit, MS forums, etc) and still unable to solve this issue for the past week. My system is just over 3 yrs old via prebuilt from NZXT bought it on April 2021. Here are the specs.

    • Ryzen R7 5800X3D with Peerless Assassin 120SE air cooler (R5 5600X previously)
    • PNY RTX 4090 XLR8 edit. (EVGA RTX 3090 previously)
    • Patriot Viper Steel 16GB 4400Mhz (XMP @4000Mhz due to instability issue, lesson learned)
    • X570 MSI MPG Gaming Plus Mobo (B450 MSI Tomahawk previously)
    • Samsung 980 Pro 2TB M.2 NVME (Seagate Barracuda 1TB M.2 previously)
    • NZXT 1000 Watts PSU

    One thing I failed to realize/rookie mistake was scanning the 980 Pro via "short scan" instead of "full scan". The result was roughly 10 bad sectors around the middle part of the SSD (currently at 1.1TB out of 1.8TB). Cloned the drive to another 980 Pro 2TB (with heat sink already installed) that I bought last year Black Friday at BestBuy as a backup (and glad I did). Swapped to the newly cloned drive and "poof", everything ran with 6 hrs of gaming session from 3 different games and watching Twitch/Youtube. So far, no crashes unlike the within few minutes of booting up different games. Hopefully, this will help someone not to make a "rookie mistake" by not checking the HDD/SSD via full scan. I will update after a week and see if this is "truly" fixed it. Fingers crossed.

    i saw this solution on reddit and what i did to enable full control was like you and removed trusted installed and set users access to full control, made sure it applied, and i changed it back to trusted installer with NT SERVICE\TrustedInstaller. i dont know if thatll help but it might.

    My reboots or freezings stopped after I changed the GPU slot to the other one.
    After a year, the exact same problem got back. I am going nuts.

    BLUF: What fixed it for me was Underclocking my GPU (from stock clock speed) by -50 Mhz for both Memory and Core.

    I have been encountering this error since a few months back, like most here only on a handful of games.

    Went down the troubleshooting rabbithole, tried just about every suggestion in this thread and others online.

    Things I tried:

    • RAM swapping (to check for faulty modules)
    • DDU to remove drivers, installing newest + older drivers
    • Disabling/changing numerous Windows, Nvidia, and BIOS settings.
    • Permission update for the .sys file in system32
    • Plus other things I cannot recall

    What helped me diagnose the problem was running the 3DMark TimeSpy Stress Test. (This is paid software, I am sure there are free benchmarking/stress testing tools out there that behave similarly). At around the 30 second mark I would get visual artifacting (red and green “flashes”) then the program would crash, giving the nvlddmkm error we all love.

    I had seen similar artifacts before back in my overcloking days so I figured I would try and fiddle there.

    So, I reinstalled EVGA Precision X1, dropped the clock speeds a bit, and re-ran the stress test until it was able to pass successfully.

    I don’t know if this means my GPU is on it’s way out the door, but a -50Mhz reduction in clock speeds is nothing and I am finally able to play crash free!

    [Edit] Suggested Underclocking Methodology:

    • Drop One (or both) clock speeds by -50 Mhz
    • Run Stress Test or Benchmark
    • Repeat the -50 drop until crash free
    • Increase speed by +25
      • If it does NOT crash, increase in increments of +5 until crashing, then decrease by -1 until stable
      • If it DOES crash, decrease in increments of -5 until stable, then increase by +1 until a crash, then drop it by that -1 again to get back to stable

    ^ This is a way to “optimize” your speeds, although it is probably safer to leave some “underclocked headroom” so you don’t run into the same issues in the near future (i.e. Once you get a stable speed, go ahead and drop another 10 or 20 Mhz and call it a day)
