Unable to install Windows 11 Update Version 23H2 (KB5036980)

I've been repeatedly trying to install this update, but each time I try to launch the update, it will suddenly stop at 96% and tell me there was something wrong with the install and my PC files would return to the previous "un-updated" state.

I've tried every method I could easily find online (Removing all non-essential hardware, did clean boot into Windows, et cetera.), but none of them fixed the isue and I'm suspecting it's a deeper, less common issue.

    Thanks, I'll give that a go. I'll let you know how it goes.

    Go to Microsoft.com and search for "msert", select windows 11 and create a USB disk from that program. Install from that USB drive.

    All Hell broke loose on my lappy last night. All sorts were jamming, freezing, or just not opening. So I did a system restore to February, as that was when this nonsense started.

    Following that, I tried again, to install Windows 11 ver 23H2, which failed around 80% installed. I've also tried turning Windows Defender Service, in case there's an anti-malware or firewall issue, with no luck.

    Checking in Windows\System I found a catroot and a catroot2 folder. It's been a long time, but I don't remember ever seeing more than just the one catroot folder. Do you know if what I found is correct, or should I rename one?

    I checked out the Microsoft site as you suggested, found the msert download, though the choices seemed limited to 32 bit or 64 bit, rather than Windows 10 or 11. I chose the latter, since mine is a 64 bit machine. The scanner ran for a tad over 2 hours. The progress box showed "18 infected files", until the scan ended, and was replaced with "Scan ended successfully. No infections found." (paraphrased).

    *Shrugs* any ideas?

    Option 1: Chose to update and restart, but my host did not go into update mode either on shutdown or restart.

    Option 2: Had no impact after restart, in fact after restart Win Update failed at the point of download in Windows Update manager.

    Option 3: Failed during installation phase of direct update with an error code that appeared so momentarily I could not capture it.

    Incidentally the previous update also failed

    This problem is so common, and has been happening so long, it's about time M$ got it's a@@@ into gear, and sorted it. They're stopping support for 22H2, which is the version most in use, after 7th October!

    OK, Neils, do an sfc /scannow, copy and past it just like that. You apparently have some corrupted files on you machine that is not allowing the install to complete. I recommend that, any files you need to save, save them to a flash drive, and do a clean install of 11 from the USB drive that you make from msert.

    Click on Download Windows 11 (microsoft.com) and create a USB flash drive for Win 11. Look, I know that works. That's what I did to get 11 in the first place, cuz my Insider update failed.

    Run rhe scan and let it repair what it can. Make the .iso flash drive and let it run for a clean install.

    I'm sorry you are having so many issues with this. I am an IT helpdesk tech and I know how balled up MS is with their "update".
