I had the same problem. Did everything that was on the internet. Use Microsoft install assistant and had two version of windows 11 in the same volume. Solution: complete backup and fresh install that wipes everything. Copy backup and all good.
Unable to install Windows 11 Update Version 23H2 (KB5036980)
I've been repeatedly trying to install this update, but each time I try to launch the update, it will suddenly stop at 96% and tell me there was something wrong with the install and my PC files would return to the previous "un-updated" state.
I've tried every method I could easily find online (Removing all non-essential hardware, did clean boot into Windows, et cetera.), but none of them fixed the isue and I'm suspecting it's a deeper, less common issue.

2025-01-27T16:26:25+00:00 I came to the same conclusion this morning and then got your message confirming my thoughts. I’m letting the Geek Squad do the work. Too much hassle to undertake by myself. Thanks much for your reply!

2025-02-18T17:36:14+00:00 Hey dears!
My update stuck in downloading 10% and then failed to install!
tried everything but then this magic happened:
going into the registry in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution OptionsAnd deleting the vdsldr.exe key (well, I renamed it to "_vdsldr.exe" just in case)
Now everything worked as a gem!

2025-03-01T15:41:41+00:00 In frustration, finally took my PC to the Geek Squad at BestBuy), and they took a few days to troubleshoot. Eventually, they discovered a corrupt something, removed that, reinstalled Windows, and now all's good.
IMO, we users could work on this forever and never get it fixed. There's a time for professional know-how. My membership with BestBuy's Geek Squad has paid off every year fixing problems like this and the tricky stuff.
