News and Interests Showing Up and Running In Task Manager

Hello,

I was checking my Task Manager today after installing Cumulative Update KB5043131 on my HP OMEN Desktop and my wife's HP Envy laptop and noticed a task called News and Interests running (see image below). We are running Win10 22H2 Build 19045.4957 . I have not noticed this before running in my Task Manager. I have News and Interests turned off in my Task Bar Settings and I do not see it but why is it all of a sudden showing up in my Task Manager. I have tried to use End Task for this but it keeps coming back after I end it. I use FireFox as my default browser and I have no interest in using this News and Interest junk now or ever. Could someone please tell me why it is there now and how I can get rid of this running in my Task Manager? I have also sent in feedback to MS Edge since I see Edge WebView2 and also to MS FeedBack Hub. Thank you.

Microsoft appears to have released a bug fix.

My MS Edge WebView2 Runtime (msedgewebview2.exe) updated to v130.0.2849.56 on 28-Oct-2029 and after a re-boot the News and Interests process no longer appears in my Task Manager. From Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features on my Win 10 Pro v22H2 machine:

Thanks for the information. I'm waiting for the next few days to reinstall the Webviews2 App from the official Microsoft website to see if it installs version v130.0.2849.56 and not v130.0.2849.52.

Last hour: Windows 11 automatically installed the v130.0.2849.56 version of Webviews 2 and now everything is back to normal on Windows 11 23H2 too.

    UPDATE: I just wanted to let those know that are having this problem that I tried something and that was doing a system restore from a point several days ago before this mess started. Now I had already uninstalled the KB5043131 on mine and my wife's computers so I figured the system restore would make sure all was gone and reset. The task went away after the restore finished. I have not reinstalled that update nor will I ever install another Preview Cumulative Update again but I did see that as soon as MS Edge updated to the current Version 129.0.2792.65 (Official build) (64-bit) the News and Interests task appeared in the Task Manager chewing memory when opening some Apps. This kind of leads me to believe that this is coming from Edge. I have filed several reports using the Edge Feedback extension about this with documentation and I have made a post in the Feedback Hub about this as well. Thank you.

    After Sys Restore and Edge Updated the News and Interests returns to Task Manager

    New and Interests spikes Mem usage to 63 Mb and sometimes higher after opening some Apps and returns to about 11 to 13 percent Mem usage after App opens.

    There trying to make us hate Windows 10.. Eventually they'l keep adding more & more bloatware in these updates till we get sick & tired of it. This is pretty much a VIRUS cause theres no direct files to delete, it's hiding itself inside another process that we have to terminate. Windows 10 is amazing, I'm hoping they don't continue this, I have no News or Interests running in my taskbar. They name this stuff this way too let our guard down, for those that catch it, it's probably a windows 11 spyware feature there adding in. Keep a look out & hold off on updates, MAKE WINDOWS 10 GREAT AGAIN!

    DonT5: For completely remove the process, you need to turn off "News and Interests" in the taskbar and also set the referred tweaks in the registry, The problem is not related with Edge Webview, it's only erroneous called by the "News and Interests" routine.

    Thank you for your response Carlos but I have turned off New and Interests in the TaskBar and did the Reg tweaks which already had the values set and the process is still present. I am on Win10 home and i use a MS Account. I will never install another Cumulative Update Preview again.
