News and Interests Showing Up and Running In Task Manager

You know, this issue, along with a lot of others, is irritating to those of us who are literate and know how to use a browser to actually find our "News" and "Interests". I don't need some automated process to eat resources on my computer, especially when my computer is just a low level HP, over 5 years old.

I know how to find stuff online if I need it. Maybe somebody with the fancy gaming computer with excess computing resources, who is impressed by having all your News and Interests flipping away on your desktop wants such a process always running, but those of us who actually know how to navigate the internet don't need it. And if our computers are aging a bit, stuff like that just eats away our computer's resources unnecessarily.

Is it that difficult for a corporation to understand? Make the process available if you want -- but making it mandatory? When many, if not most of us will never use it? It's crazy.

I have this same issue on my Win 10 Pro v22H2 machine. After I disable the News and Interests widget from my taskbar settings menu (by right-clicking on an empty space in my taskbar and changing News and Interests | Turn Off to ENABLED) and/or Local Group Policy Editor (Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | News and Interests | Enable News and Interests on the Taskbar | DISABLED) I still see a News and Interests process running in Task Manager. With the News and Interests widget disabled this way my News and Interests process is suspended in Task Manager and consumes no CPU but it continues to consume memory, sometimes using over 60 MB of RAM.

A few users posting about this bug in the 08-Oct-2024 AskWoody topic October Updates Are Out have reported that going to the more extreme measure of uninstalling the MSEdgeWebView2 application (or even uninstalling the MS Edge browser with a custom batch file - see PKCano's 20-Oct-2024 post # 2711510 in that topic) will stop the six instances of MSEdgeWebView2.exe from running under the News and Interests process in Task Manager, but this will NOT stop the instance of SearchApp.exe.

Users posting comments below Vishal Gupta’s 04-Oct-2024 AskVG! troubleshooting guide at Fix: News and Interests Running in Task Manager in Windows 10 have also noted that the WebExperience app described in Step # 5 of those instructions (i.e., STEP 5: Use PowerShell Commands to Uninstall or Remove News and Interests in Windows 10) no longer exists in the current Win 10 OS build 19045.5011, which is further evidence that Microsoft has recently changed the way that New and Interests is implemented in Windows 10.

It runs as soon as you stop it :-(. I was able to stop it for a few hours last night, after uninstalling Copilot and hiding news in Skype.

I have filed several bug reports using the MS Edge Feedback extension at the top of the Edge browser and I just filed another one for an update on getting rid of this mess. The is an Edge and Edge Webview2 problem. I just uninstalled the bloatware and spyware CoPilot from my Win10 computer and I already have had Skype uninstalled since MS took it over. This News and Interests gives me Event 10010 errors DCOM errors on restart of my computer

"Microsoft.Windows.Search_1.14.17.19041_neutral_neutral_cw5n1h2txyewy!ShellFeedsUI did not register with DCOM within the required timeout" and if I do not kill that News and Interests task before I restart or shutdown my computer several of my Apps will not close properly and I have to wait for Windows to close them. Please file a bug report with the Edge Team if you have not done so and include any screenshots or files with it. No matter what anyone tells you on how to get rid of that task it will come back and the DEVS are the only ones to fix it. I have tried everything from doing to registry to making a new Win10 account and nothing works. Good luck and if I hear of anything I will post it here.
