News and Interests Showing Up and Running In Task Manager

Hello,

I was checking my Task Manager today after installing Cumulative Update KB5043131 on my HP OMEN Desktop and my wife's HP Envy laptop and noticed a task called News and Interests running (see image below). We are running Win10 22H2 Build 19045.4957 . I have not noticed this before running in my Task Manager. I have News and Interests turned off in my Task Bar Settings and I do not see it but why is it all of a sudden showing up in my Task Manager. I have tried to use End Task for this but it keeps coming back after I end it. I use FireFox as my default browser and I have no interest in using this News and Interest junk now or ever. Could someone please tell me why it is there now and how I can get rid of this running in my Task Manager? I have also sent in feedback to MS Edge since I see Edge WebView2 and also to MS FeedBack Hub. Thank you.

Microsoft appears to have released a bug fix.

My MS Edge WebView2 Runtime (msedgewebview2.exe) updated to v130.0.2849.56 on 28-Oct-2029 and after a re-boot the News and Interests process no longer appears in my Task Manager. From Control Panel | Programs | Programs and Features on my Win 10 Pro v22H2 machine:

Thanks for the information. I'm waiting for the next few days to reinstall the Webviews2 App from the official Microsoft website to see if it installs version v130.0.2849.56 and not v130.0.2849.52.

Last hour: Windows 11 automatically installed the v130.0.2849.56 version of Webviews 2 and now everything is back to normal on Windows 11 23H2 too.

    I have not installed Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5045594)

    Without it, there aren't "News and Interests" tasks in task manager...

    Cortana UWP has nothing to do with this.

    We've to understand the present behavior of the 7 tasks of "news and interests" is by design (bad) and not a bug. I hope Microsoft makes a Policy to give the chance to system admins to "disable" this! It's the "minimum" they can do here.

    Parcial solution for now:

    If you want to completely get rid of the multiple MSEdgeWebView2.exe processes running in background as a part of the News and Interests feature in your Windows 10 device, following quick and easy method will help you:

    STEP 1: Open Command Prompt as Administrator using any method given in this guide.

    STEP 2: Now copy and paste following command in Command Prompt window and press Enter key to run the command:

    reg add "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\msedgewebview2.exe" /v Debugger /d rundll32

    Restart your computer and you’ll no longer see msedgewebview2.exe or News and Interests process running in Task Manager.

    ATTENTION: This disables Edge Webview runtime for apps that need it (ex. Adobe Photoshop 2024/2025)

    Hello! I wanted to let those know that that after I installed

    Cumulative Update Preview for .NET Framework 3.5, 4.8 and 4.8.1 for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64 

    KB5045991 my News and Interests process that was running in task manager eating memory and causing other problems such as 10010 DCOM errors and causing some programs not to close properly on restart and shutdown has now disappeared. I do not seem to have any further problems "yet" but who knows how long this will last. Before I installed the update KB5045991 I had been getting 10010 DCOM errors involving Microsoft.Windows.Search_1.14.17.19041_neutral_neutral_cw5n1h2txyewy!ShellFeedsUI and CortanaUI.AppXf8r3d8cn5hd71h9jyzah6ak9f3shj2d2.mca so I uninstalled deprecated Cortana but whether that had anything to do with it I do not know. I have not installed Cumulative Update Preview for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5045594) nor will I ever again install these optional Cumulative Update Previews updates as they have proven to be buggy and cause problems and MS seems to be using us a guinea pigs to find these bugs. I will wait for the Patch Tuesday updates from now on. If this "what seems to be a fix" holds after the Nov Patch Tuesday Updates then I will come back and marked this resolved.
