Update to win 11 22h2 always fails

Hello everyone,

I'm having issues with Windows 11 update and can't complete the update by any means. The system is prompting me with two updates for

  • Windows 11, version 22H2
  • 2024-10 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8.1 for x64-based Windows 11, version 22H2 (KB5044033)

The former goes through a long download and reboot each time, and ends up with the error code “Installation Error - 0xc1900101”.

The latter fails to install within a few minutes with “Installation Error - 0x80070057”.

My computer configuration

  • CPU:14900K
  • GPU:AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX(24GB)
  • Memory:Corsair Memory 192 GB DDR5 4000MHz(48GB×4)
  • SSD: SOLIDIGM SSD 2T
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte Z790 AERO G

All of my hardware drivers as well as the motherboard's BIOS version have been updated to the latest version and I have not installed any third party antivirus software, I have been trying for three months now and have not had a single success installing the update, the system version is now stuck on version number 22621.4391, I have tried almost every troubleshooting step I can find and none of them have solved the problem.

Here's what I've tried so far:

  1. Upgraded in-place using the installer, but the update problem persists.
  2. Windows Update Troubleshooter: ran the troubleshooter, but the update issue persists.
  3. Went to the motherboard manufacturer's official website to download all the official versions of the drivers and override the installation, but the update issue still exists.
  4. Go to the Microsoft® Update Catalog website to download the corresponding version of the patch package, but the installation still fails.
  5. Using the ISO file to install with personal applications and data preserved prompts The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation
  6. Disable Defender and perform a strict clean boot while staying offline, but the update issue persists.
  7. Running the System File Checker (sfc /scannow) from a command prompt, restarting services, deleting the SoftwareDistribution folder, using DISM to repair Windows Update corruption, etc., but the update problem persists.
  8. Running on a single memory stick, removing the graphics card, connecting to a single monitor using only the core graphics, removing all peripheral USB devices, and keeping only the necessary mouse and keyboard connections, but the update problem persists.

    Hi Ramesh.

    I've run the 2nd fixlist as requested, I'll upload the new fixlog.txt to you first, later I'll remount the previously downloaded ISO and run setup.exe, I'll let you know the result when it's done.

    Hi John,

    Generally, the error 0xc1900101 - 0x20017 is caused by outdated drivers or BIOS. Since you have the latest BIOS, it's probably a bad driver that is causing the issue.

    Please run the 2nd fixlist. It removes the remaining 3rd party drivers.

    After rebooting, please mount the ISO you downloaded earlier and run setup.exe.

    Hi Ramesh.

    Unfortunately after two hours of downloading and installing, the results still haven't changed, I'm sure I haven't done any extra setups or manipulations but still get the results pictured below, this is as frustrating as every attempt I've made in the previous three months, I end up getting the same error code, but I'm still very thankful for your advice, is there anything else I can try please? As well as do you require any up to date log files from me?

    Now, please see if you can upgrade to 24H2 using the ISO.

    1. Download Windows 11 Media Creation Tool (MCT) from this link:

    1. Run MCT and download the ISO it recommends for your system. Do *not* uncheck "Use the recommended options for this PC".
    2. Right-click on the downloaded ISO and choose "Mount." This assigns the ISO a drive letter.
    3. Run setup.exe from the ISO drive. This starts the in-place upgrade.

    (Your files, settings and applications will be preserved if you use the ISO recommended for your system by the Media Creation Tool.)

    Thanks for your suggestion, I backed up the registry using Acelogix RegBak and used the Fixlist.txt file you uploaded, the log file (FixLog.txt) of the Farbar output has been uploaded to OneDrive, hope that helps, thanks.
