Update to win 11 22h2 always fails

Hello everyone,

I'm having issues with Windows 11 update and can't complete the update by any means. The system is prompting me with two updates for

  • Windows 11, version 22H2
  • 2024-10 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5 and 4.8.1 for x64-based Windows 11, version 22H2 (KB5044033)

The former goes through a long download and reboot each time, and ends up with the error code “Installation Error - 0xc1900101”.

The latter fails to install within a few minutes with “Installation Error - 0x80070057”.

My computer configuration

  • CPU:14900K
  • GPU:AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX(24GB)
  • Memory:Corsair Memory 192 GB DDR5 4000MHz(48GB×4)
  • SSD: SOLIDIGM SSD 2T
  • Motherboard: Gigabyte Z790 AERO G

All of my hardware drivers as well as the motherboard's BIOS version have been updated to the latest version and I have not installed any third party antivirus software, I have been trying for three months now and have not had a single success installing the update, the system version is now stuck on version number 22621.4391, I have tried almost every troubleshooting step I can find and none of them have solved the problem.

Here's what I've tried so far:

  1. Upgraded in-place using the installer, but the update problem persists.
  2. Windows Update Troubleshooter: ran the troubleshooter, but the update issue persists.
  3. Went to the motherboard manufacturer's official website to download all the official versions of the drivers and override the installation, but the update issue still exists.
  4. Go to the Microsoft® Update Catalog website to download the corresponding version of the patch package, but the installation still fails.
  5. Using the ISO file to install with personal applications and data preserved prompts The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during BOOT operation
  6. Disable Defender and perform a strict clean boot while staying offline, but the update issue persists.
  7. Running the System File Checker (sfc /scannow) from a command prompt, restarting services, deleting the SoftwareDistribution folder, using DISM to repair Windows Update corruption, etc., but the update problem persists.
  8. Running on a single memory stick, removing the graphics card, connecting to a single monitor using only the core graphics, removing all peripheral USB devices, and keeping only the necessary mouse and keyboard connections, but the update problem persists.

    Hi John,

    You're most welcome. Though we couldn't fix the 0xc1900101 error, CBS issues are fixed, and quality updates and .NET security updates should install fine. 23H2 is supported until November 2025. At that time, you may consider a clean installation of 24H2. Meanwhile, if I find a promising fix for 0xc1900101, I'll update this thread. I'm subscribed to this thread.

    Hi Ramesh.

    I've decided to manually turn on updates every five weeks to manually install quality and security updates as they are released by Microsoft.

    Things don't seem to be getting any better any time soon, and I don't know what exactly is wrong with my computer, nor can I think of anything else that might get my computer back to normal.

    I will use this method until I buy my next computer, but as you can see, the computer I am using now is very expensive, so I will probably use this method for the next very many years in an effort to keep my computer running as stable as possible while trying to get the necessary updates, but I will probably have no choice but to stop at version 23H2, or I will ask for your help again once version 24H2 is stable.

    Either way, I will always remember your help, and I can't tell you how much I appreciate the time and effort you put into saving my very sick computer, and I sincerely wish you, your family, and everyone you care about all the best!

    Tried this?

    Set it to 11 22H2, and click Take Control. Restart Windows.

    If that doesn't help, here are some workarounds I can think of.

    • Pause updates for 5 weeks.

    (or)

    • You can use a program like StopUpdates10 to turn off WU. However, pausing or turning WU off might make your system vulnerable. Therefore, you must manually install quality and security updates when they are released. Or unblock WU using that app once in a while and install the available updates for the system.

    Please try this tool. It adds two more registry settings. https://www.grc.com/Incontrol/details.htm

    Set it to 11 23H2, and click Take Control.

    Restart Windows.

    If that doesn't help, click Release Control.

    Then, set it to 11 22H2, and click Take Control.

    Restart Windows.
