new messenger opens links in EDGE instead of default browser.

Are you new to tech? This is something very easily tested for yourself, what's the confusion?

I've been a tech for 27 years and this is yet again a disgusting business practice from one of the most corrupt companies on earth, Microsoft.

To save the so called tech person time, I tested myself, took less than a minute, it defaults to EDGE regardless of the settings telling you that it will choose the default browser, as i said, another disgusting act from Microsoft against its users, that they obviously don't care about, maybe if we were money?

That's true, but then why did they make it so that Messenger now opens in Edge? Seems like handing a lot of power to Microsoft. Messenger isn't even a stand-alone app anymore; I have a program called Revo Uninstaller, and according to that, the new "version" of Messenger is 0 KB in size, because all it does is redirect to Edge. No one uses Edge willingly, so it's obviously a major pain to have Messenger suddenly only open links in Microsoft's garbage browser. It also doesn't show when someone is online, and according to others in this thread, the call/video functions aren't working either.

The reason it opens links in Edge is because the new app is just a webview running in Edge. So it's like you're running Edge browser, clicking a link in Edge, it will always open link in itself... There is no fix for that.
I don't know why Meta did that change...

My guess would be cold hard cash.

Can we please stop making comments that are just complaints against Meta and Microsoft? Let's keep the discussion practical, centered around the solutions/workarounds.

I will repeat my current workaround: For me, the older version of the non-browser app is working great (downloadable from https://messenger.en.uptodown.com/windows/download/1026550438). Every time I reboot the PC and the app is loaded as part of that process, it suggests upgrading, but I simply click "Not Now" and the popup goes away. (I know that others have described how to make it a Chrome-based browser app, but I use Firefox, which Messenger doesn't yet support for video/audio calling.)
