new messenger opens links in EDGE instead of default browser.

May I ask if this only happens on the messenger or does all external links from other apps open to MS Edge?

In the meantime, you can follow these steps:

*Open the Windows Settings by pressing the Win + I keys.

*Navigate to Apps > Default apps.

*Scroll down and click on Choose default apps by protocol.

*Locate MICROSOFT EDGE in the list

*Click on the program icon to the right of it.

*From the list, select your desired Browser to set it as the default for the protocol.

*Confirm the change if prompted.

*Restart your device.

*Check if it still opens links in MS edge.

So in other words... the workaround is to not use the Messenger desktop app at all and to instead just use the Chrome popout version of Facebook Messenger's web-app.

Makes sense. Guess I was long overdue to uninstall this garbage app that CONSTANTLY pesters you with tri-weekly updates and annoying problems. RIP messenger for windows.

or just install the version from uptodown, then it will ask you to update to the latest, which will redirect you to the above link.

it does still work, the icon is on the right side and looks like a monitor icon with a downwards arrow. (mine was next to where i can choose to bookmark page on chrome) then it makes a facebook app in windows which you can use to fullscreen messenger.

But i did see in another post they downloaded the older versdion on messenger app and it was working, i downloaded the messenger app from https://facebook-messenger-for-windows-7.en.uptodown.com/windows/download and once it was installed it asked me to update. once i updated it i am now still able to use the app like normal without being told i need to download microsoft store one :).
not sure if it will work after turning off and on again, but so far it working :).

This isn't so much of a Microsoft issue but more of a Meta decision. They knowingly went this route. How absurd.
