Hello

I never had any problems with my PC .

Windows 11, version 24H2 update is ready to install, I approve the restart, it starts working, stops at 68% for 5 minutes, then restarts and turns off PC. When I booth back, it simply wants to download it and install it again.

Troubleshooter shows Error but offers no solution.

I have downloaded the ISO and followed all instructions, but 26% in, the installer just stops all goes back to windows and says Windows 11 instalation failed.

Any ideas?

Setuplogscollect.bat did not create a zip file. For every .evtx file, it reported these lines (I took a screenshot, used Sh+Win+T to copy the text, then manually corrected the output shown below):

    New File 69632 C:$WINDOWS.~.BT\Sources\R011back\evtlogs\Microsoft-Windows-WLAN-AutoConfig%40perationa1.evtx
    2024/12/18 08:61:21 ERROR 2 (0x00000002)

Changing File Attributes C:$WINDOWS.~vBT\Sources\R011back\evtlogs\Mic rosoft -Windows -WLAN-AutoConfig%40perationa1.evtx
The system cannot find the file specified.

Then it would say "Waiting 30 seconds" and start again. About the tenth time (I was typing other notes while it ran) I noticed it was repeating itself.

The app Everything confirms each .evtx file is in the directory list in the command window.

I can manually copy and paste the contents of each setuperr.log (in C:$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther) if that helps. Easy to do.
When I tried viewing the .evtx files in Notepad, Notepad++, or Metapad, I'd get an error.

About a dozen messages arrived while we were out getting a Christmas tree. I'll browse though them soon.

Maybe you can collect them manually.

    • Open the "C:$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources" folder.
    • Select the two folders, "Panther" and "Rollback" (if present).
    • Delete the GenuineTicket.xml file in the Panther folder.
    • Copy the two folders to the desktop and Zip them.
    • Upload the zip file to OneDrive and share the link here.

This failed on my system as well. The result really screwed my system.

Drivers were now missing, MS teams could no longer authenticate me, and Outlook won't boot up (stuck in processing).

Opening Outlook in safe mode, it won't update my inboxes for any of my accounts.

Rolling back to the restore point just before the upgrade attempt did not resolve any of the Teams or Outlook issues.

None of my attempts at restoring outlook, even re-installing, have resolved the issues.

    Great update, Microsoft. nice job.

    so 3x a charm. 24H2 installed successfully.

Still getting driver errors for a Citrix app. Tried uninstalling it from add/remove programs, as well as the Citrix uninstaller and it won't proceed. No idea why. I'll keep working on this.

For the Outlook and Teams issues where Outlook was stuck in "processing" and wouldn't complete the book, and Teams couldn't authenticate me, I found the issue, thanks to another blog I found.

Super easy solution found after a full day of dealing with it...
Internet options > connections > LAN settings > check box "auto detect settings" > ok

The 24H2 update apparently unchecked this setting on my system. I never would have found this... my internet connection was not disrupted anywhere except in MS apps.

I deleted all the drivers hvciscan identified (mostly for a Logitech webcam I use, but also one which is used to download videos (jaksta)

After all this, hvciscan said no drivers were found as non compliant.

The update still fails with the same code as before

    0xc1900101 - 0x20017 failed in safe_os during boot

I wouldn't hold your breath. Where the ISO run comes in to give the error codes to place you where you are. If it's got to 70% and unwinds it means it may have failed the memory integrity test if all other things are fine. Rather than pouring through log files this will quickly point you in the right direction... it did for me. If I'd used it 9 weeks ago, I wouldn't have waisted 9 weeks.

It's not published widely. They seem to go through their hand outs of advising do this, do that. Some threads have the individual solution where the tech person went through the users logs, other stop with no solution.

That tool above will pull out by name suspect drivers in the second boot which you can chase up as to what they are and whether they can be removed. I only had one and that one would have run for 9 weeks through the antics. I suspect Microsoft tech hands out aren't up to speed on 24h2 so don't cover how to identify the drivers of issue. You must get rid of all trace of non Microsoft anti virus programmes before any of this. Steady on updating drivers as well which can fail in the first boot. Once you get to the second boot and then a roll back you are nearly there.

Updating all drivers to the most recent can introduce problems on the first boot. This I ended up with, but my solution I found on line with this:

    》》

I figured out the issue with my specific machine way back in January, It was a driver issue.

The driver in question was "Intel RST VMD Managed Controller 09AB" v20.0.0.1037 (13-Oct-23). With this driver the updates would always rollback, I've reproduced this issue several times on multiple cnanary builds.

If I roll back the driver to the last one which in my case is v19.5.7.1058 (29-Jun-23) the updates install fine.

    《《

Basically I did the same which corrected the first boot. The duff driver had got introdused. That issue was detected in the Insider programme but not corrected. Funny enough when it's finally installed it ends up on the most recent release of "Intel RST VMD Managed Controller 09AB". Hoping 25h2 will update fine, otherwise I have a copy of the good driver.

So it's possible that going mad with updating all drivers isn't totally wise. If it's going as far as the second boot then gets an issue with the first boot you have introduced a duff driver so you need to unravel that.
