Security Update for Windows 10, 2024-11, KB5048239 getting error 0x80070643 when installing

I have exactly the same problem as this (reported earlier this year), but with the new KB5048239 update. I get the 0x80070643 error when it tries to install. Retried several times, but same issue. I'm pretty sure this is the same problem that I had back in January, too. All security updates have worked fine since then, till now. At that time I was told that this was a general problem with the update and a fix was being made by Microsoft. I did wait and eventually that previous update went away. Now here we are again...

The 2024-01 Security Update for Windows 10 Version 22H2 for x64-based Systems (KB5034441) will not install on my Windows 10 laptop computer.

I get the following message There were some problems installing updates, but we'll try again later. If you keep seeing this and want to search the web or contact support for information, this may help: (0x80070643) Retry

When I click on Retry it says its Installing-0% for a few minutes then Installed-100% and then I get Download Error (0x80070643) There were some problems installing updates, but we'll try again later. Windows Update Troubleshooter could not fix this problem.

I'm not sure what to do, please help.

    The problem is you need to disable WindowsRE while updating.

    TODO:

    open Powersheel in Admin mode.

    type: reagentc /disable

    Open \windows\system32\recovery\ folder

    del *.xml files

    now you run windows update.

    then restart PC.

    open Powersheel in Admin mode.

    type: reagentc /enable

    problem diappears.

    I have no problem inserting an image. I see:

    Above, the last icon (on the right) is a "grid" ("create a table").

    Click the icon immediately to the left ("moon over rocky mountain") to insert an image, such as your screen-shot.

    What error-message do you get when you try?

    I have two computers.

    For the first one, I replaced the disk-drive, as above, expanding the "WinRe" partition.

    For the second one, after applying the November updates, and restarting, I launched Windows Update. It offered this update, and successfully applied it.

    I've tried many suggestions to get kb5048239 and its predecessors to execute.

    0x80070643 error every time.

    My theory follows.

    Windows RE folder is way too large but I expanded it as a solution attempt.

    Ran Win 8.1 (upgraded as some point from 8.0) for many years.

    Installed to a Win10 version from a copy on MS site (Create Windows 10 Media Installation) 1/16/23.

    Went smoothly enough and computer has since run well.

    It is my feeling that Windows RE files are still from Win 8.1.

    winre.wim for example is dated 10/2/2016. 3 others are from 6/2012.

    Wasted a lot of time trying to replace files in this 'folder' using those from a Win10 computer with no issue.

    I don't feel vulnerable as a threat won't try to change files that are wrong in the first place?

    I have given up but would welcome a solution to fix failed update every month.

    @Jay,

    I have one computer that was upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10. It has TWO "Recovery" partitions.

    From an "administrative-level" command-prompt, when I enter the: reagentc /info command, I see:

    Recovery Environment: \\?\GLOBALROOT\device\harddisk0\partition2\Recovery\ ...

    Note that the "counting" is "zero-origin".

    So, "harddisk0" is the first disk-drive,

    and "partition2" is the third partition.

    The second partition probably is your "C:" partition.

    So, is your "large" partition the one that Windows would use, or are the updates trying to access the "smaller" partition?

    Did you boot from the media you created, or did you run the "setup.exe" in the root-folder of the media?

    If you repeat the download of the media, you should get Windows, as updated to November 2024 version, or even the December 2024 (released yesterday). Presumably, the failed updates will have already been integrated into this media.

    Give it a try.
