Latest Windows 11 24/H2 Release and Graphics Issues

Ever since Win11 24H2 my RTX 3060 12gb just thinks the monitor is disconnected when the screen comes back on and my Windows all get unmaximized.

I have Intel i7-12700k with iGPU enabled and two RTX 3060 cards for dev reasons (so 3 GPUs). Will see what happens when I disable it but very annoying. Wish I never updated.

I noticed the WDDM updated which I'm guessing broke a bunch of stuff.

We experienced the same issues. Davinci Resolve 18.6 editing H.265 Quick Sync dissapeared from the preferences menu. By comparison out editing performance slowed to a crawl on custom build from Puget Systems with i9-14900k / NVIDIA RTX4090. intel and NVIDIA both were sending out multiple updates every week. So you have Win. 11 / 24H2 followed by CPU & GPU updates trying to fix a problem, yet claim nobody knows about it.

I uninstalled drivers and restored Win. 11 to previous date but still lagging compared to before.

Going to uninstall all updates back to first of Dec. 2024and turn off auto update till this is resolved.

Useful info about Win 11 24H2 quirks

I am sticking with Win 11 23H2 for now whilst I sort out some other anomalies I have using Adobe Premiere Video editing application.

The latest version (25.1) has caused a change of behaviour in how iGPU is selected for H264 decoding and NVidia discrete GPU (4080 Super) ius used for some reason.

I don't want to mix the two yet with Win 11 24H2 until I have one problem solved :-)

Ok, here is my experience. I installed 24H2, rebooted, then let Windows Update discover and install a bunch of driver updates including an Nvidia driver update for my RTX 4050 GPU.

After the update I am seeing intermittent performance problem when playing games and tracked it down to this one key difference in settings in 24H2:

Prior to 24H2 in the Windows Graphics settings there was a selection for "Desktop Applications" for you to force all desktop applications, by default, to use the iGPU

After 24H2, the default desktop application settings has been removed which means now that Windows will occasionally take over the Nvidia GPU for something even when I am in a full screen game for which I have configured it to use the Nvidia GPU only. This causes the game to suddenly and randomly switch rendering from the Nvidia GPU to the iGPU and my fps drops from 60+ to 5 or 6 fps. To fix it I have to exit and relaunch the game. Not a good experience.

Same issues. In my case, it's clearly a graphics driver issue. on Dell G16, RTX 4070 Notebook.

After 24H2 install, complete trainwreck with Intel firmware and graphics. After installing those, external 32 inch 4k external via USBC/Display Port starts blinking black and then back on every 10 seconds or so.

Rolled back Nvidia driver several versions to Dell compatible version. Seem to fix the problem for the rest of the session.

Logged out and back in and problem reappeared. Machine hang after both screens went dark trying to install Nvidia driver update. Had to hard reboot.

Disconnected external monitor and rebooted.

Ran Nvidia update to latest driver and plugged external back in. Seems to be working.

For now.

**UPDATE** Problem reappeared after reboot. After troubleshooting this for four hours, in my case, it is 100% from Nvidia drivers. Uninstalled with DDU and laptop screen worked fine, everything good, no external monitor connected. Since Windows auto installs the driver for Nvidia since the graphics card is present, everything goes off the rails after that. Black laptop screen. External monitor works but at Intel UHD resolution (not 4k). Blinks black on an off randomly. Updating to latest Nvidia drivers don't help. What a total trainwreck. Cannot believe this is a problem with two huge companies in 2025.

**UPDATE 2** Narrowed this down even further to the connection of an external monitor using Display Port to USBC cable. Uninstalled Nvidia driver with DDU again and rebooted. Everything works as expected until I add external monitor. I can add the external monitor via HDMI. Unfortunately, on my laptop, the Nvidia graphics only run through USBC port so the 4k resolution is not supported. Also, you cannot expand desktop to both monitors, only duplicate. If I add the monitor through the USCB on my laptop, the laptop screen goes black and is unusable, the external monitor displays the desktop at 4k but is twitchy and blinks on and off randomly every 15-20 seconds.

**FINAL UPDATE** In my case (Nvidia RTX Laptop with external 4k HDR monitor), the issue is with Display Settings > Extend these displays. It doesn't work. The fix (in my case), select external 4k monitor (#2, main monitor) and select Show only on 2.

You won't be able to use the laptop screen as a second monitor because it goes dark but all of the black blinking issues and stuttering disappear, even when using latest Nvidia drivers and Display Port to USBC cable.
