Need fix for lost audio from update to Windows 24H2

I updated to Windows 24H2. I have now lost all of my audio. When I hover my mouse over the sound icon in the tray, it shows that "No audio device is installed". How do I fix this?

    Hi,

    After the Wlindows 11 24H2 update 2025-01, cumulative and .Net, I had the same issue that my output sound device had disappeared and got the "No audio device is installed" message.

    The only place where i could see the loudspeaker device, was when I went into Control Panel -> Sound (mmsys.cpl). The device was there, but it had been inactivated. I activated it and everything was good again!

    I had a lot of Windows updates installed today but it did not help my Win 11 audio issue (which is an annoying, period, distortion or loud scratching sound in audio playback.)

    Oddly enough, I went to System > Sound >Properties > Output Settings > Format

    selected "16 bit, 8000Hz (Telephone Quality)" and the issue vanished!

    BUT when I selected either of the other two options ("Tape Recorder\DVD Quality") the problem reappeared.

    I finally worked out a fix for me; I had to update my BIOS. My BIOS was from early 2020 and the one I could update to was mid-2020. Once updated all my USB Audio devices started working again. Worth checking out if you can update your BIOS if you're still experiencing issues.

    I have the problem on my Win 11 system. I attached my speakers to a Win 10 system and the problem disappeared. In my case, it wasn't the speakers.
