Since Windows 11 24H2 update everything runs slow and takes longer to load

Ever since this update, my system takes a long time before it's fully up to speed. I'm talking 10 minutes or more. Even the opening screen where I enter my PIN takes longer to come up. After entering the pin, it takes a while for the app icons to show on the desktop and even then the taskbar arrives later. I can't get Outlook or Chrome to launch right away. It can take minutes for them to load and be responsive.

Even after the system is functioning more normally, it is still slower than before the update. Emails take a few seconds longer to open up. Files take longer to open. Chrome tabs take longer to show.

I've checked Task Manager. My CPU is at less than 10% and my RAM at 59% with apps open. Hard disk doesn't show a lot of activity. I've looked at processes and don't see anything that's consuming a lot of resources. Nothing obvious is showing up. I've made sure to turn off a lot of apps at start up that were unnecessary.

I've also turned off sys.main. Before that, everything was even slower and more annoying than what I have already described. Two other annoying things I've discovered. Microsoft turned off Malwarebytes and turned on Defender anti-virus without my permission. It also turned on Edge. None of these things should have been activated without asking my permission. The update should keep every app the way it was either turned on or off.

24H2 has changed something in my computer that affects all activity and load times. It is not hardware related.

I have a fairly fast cpu, ram and SSD disk access speed. This is a gaming computer. It worked fast before the update. I've made a few adjustments to speed things up but those were not necessary before 24H2.

I do enjoy reading the replies...they will never just admit that their software is ****. Which is the reason for issues 90% of the time

    Brand new Dell towers, decent CPU's (Intel), 32GB ram, and 512 SSD, SSD does not have cache, but windows naturally caches in ram, can cause some slowdown in games, but not day to day.

    We are using these in production all day long, and we have been noticing some significant slowdowns, and inconsistent operation of Windows/Services.

    One example is that Explorer windows do not open in consistent timelines. We've tried multiple different tools, and noticed that NitroPDF may be partially to blame, however that does not explain how, even with a blank preview window, explorer loads very slowly (20-30 seconds), or instantly at different times.
    Start it 10 times, and 2 of those will be very slow.

    Programs do seem to overall run better generally, but startup for some can be oddly slow for no reason.

    Loading a file from the Explorer process seems to take longer in PDF's for example vs a DWF file, while the DWF requires rendering time, and generally more CPU (Drawing files for AutoDesk), they generally load significantly faster than the PDF's which are 10 times smaller.

    To address the suggestions:
    I tried checking updates, no issues with loading updates, or running them. No background processes seem to be stuck.

    Checked drivers from Dell specifically using their driver manager tool. Seemed to work quite well, and grabbed the latest, and stable releases of the drivers.

    Sophos works great on all of the PC's that we're using, and some of those are the literal Pentium's mentioned elsewhere. While the Pentium's are slow, they are not inconsistent in loading software. Even with windows 10, and 4GB ram... (Yes, we do have some old hardware, no I don't care, we're working on it.)

    No system files have been reported with the SFC->DISM(All 4 main checks)-> SFC scan again -> CHK disk.
    None of the checks showed any issues whatsoever.

    No Storage optimization at all to my knowledge would be required on and SSD. Fragmentation generally only matters in sequential reads of large files, and on an SSD where the files benefit from being on multiple chips should be irrelevant.

    That being said about SSD's, the example that I bring is that all of the new machines are running cache-less 512GB single chip 2230 drives.
    It is ever so slightly possible, but I don't think windows even lets you defrag an SSD.

    I do not see any reasonable reason that Windows 11 24H2 should be running slow, and that Microsoft should have even released it in this state.

    They needed to do a LOT more testing before making this the new default for installation, let-alone public.

    Do you have other suggestions for the issues with the slow 24H2 Update/Default install.
    We could reformat these machines to 23H2, but I feel that is not going to fix the issues.

    i have the same problem. 7950x 64 gigs of ram rtx 4090... windows is starting to get to the point where its just not any good any more. however steam is making a new os for pcs that im just waiting for. im done with windows. windows 11 is one of the worst operating systems ive ever used. the steam os will run exe programs as well to those curious. it should be out by summer or winter of 2025 when it does come out i highley recommend you remove windows and use the new steam os.

    Windows 11 is definitely not the best system… Especially the windows defender antivirus not working at all. Windows defender lets in tons of viruses and doesn’t really defend against anything. Windows 11 is also very bugged and has tons of issues.

    I am still on windows 10 because windows 11 is just so bad. If you are still having this problem just reinstall windows and wait until steam os comes out.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the information. I had this problem with my laptop, and then I tried to restore it but the rollback option did not work, the machine turned off and turned on continuously. Then I use an installation disk to open windows in safe mode but you can not reinstall windows from the safe mode using the media creation tool. Finally, I had to make a clean installation. I suggest that Microsoft must create a way to reinstall Windows (in-place upgrade) from safe mode, most of the time when you have problems use safe mode to fix it, how can we reinstall Windows if we can not run it? It is frustrating.
