24H2 crashing games - working on a fix?

I had installed this update back in December and faced major issues with my streaming software OBS, discord, some games and Edge. I rolled it back and everything worked as it should. Fast forward to February 21 when this update was forced on me AGAIN, i cannot stream a full session without crashing due to memory leaks. I looked in my event viewer to see memory errors and they all started on the day this update was installed. Coincidence? I think not.

To be clear, my pc is less than a year old and has lots of disk space, memory and processing power. It was never an issue until this update came.

Please fix this already, i can't roll back now and it's extremely frustrating. At this point i am considering wiping my OS and going back to windows 10.

Yesterday March 17, 2025 - I received a notice that my computer needed to restart to finish installing 24H2! Yikes! BUT it seems to be finally fixed for my system.

I didn't know that I could have stopped the update by changing my settings to pause Windows again, so I just rebooted, and although I had a few issues that were fixed easily. It appears to working great. I am not sure if it is the 24H2 update or not, but my games are playing smooth as silk on 24H2 !

Background

I tried to update to 24H2 on November 24 and lost COD and Fortnite. Both would just freeze up during play. I also lost a few other items, like Acrobat Reader and the Fusion 360 Cad program. Fortunately, I discovered the "go back" option, and quickly, it took me back to a working compute on 23H2

After reading about the 24H2 bug here and elsewhere, I decided to try again in February 2025. The results were the same, with crashes and black screens. I quickly used the "Go Back" option to get my computer running again. Then, I paused Windows Update for five weeks. Yesterday was March 17, 2025. When I opened my computer, it was still on winter 23H2. I had turned off Windows updates for as long as possible, so I was about to reset it again, but this time I received a notice that my computer needed to restart to finish installing 24H2! Yikes! I didn't know I could have stopped the update by changing my settings to pause Windows again, so I just rebooted, and sure enough, about two hours later, my machine was up and running on 24H2. Yikes! (I found out that you have 10 days to use the Go Back option if you encounter any issues, so I started checking all the problems I had. I ran into no issues with COD BO6 or Fortnite. I couldn't use Acrobat Reader, but I discovered that changing it to run as Windows 8 allowed it to work. My CAD software works fine. The only issue I encountered was that the MakerBot Desktop software I use for my 3D printer was completely unresponsive. But I simply reinstalled the software, and it's up and running now. Overall, everything seems to be working well today! I will update if I have any issues. So far, on the first day of 24H2, all is well!

I have deactivated all Win 11 gaming improvements.

That means:

Win key + X > System > Play/Games Gamemode >Graphics > Advanced

Below: Advanced graphics settings > Deactivate hardware accelerated GPU planning

It helped me in Diablo Immortal

I had no problems with 24H4 in other games

You should then restart your PC

Caution: If hardware accelerated GPU planning has been deactivated, it no longer works in new games for Nvidia frame generation DLSS and for AMD FSR!

Uninstalling Nvidia drivers is one of the first thing I did. Sounds too technical and too cumbersome and hope based. It would take several hours to back everything up reinstall windows resin tall steam reinstall a few games and see it crash again. Mine was a days old windows pro installation anyway, I will stick to windows 10 pro for now and a few years. Now I also learned that modifying registry can mess any given windows version compelling a new clean install, to update . Not always but anyhow.
