Win10, Right click on pinned programs in Start Menu no longer have file list

I'm pretty sure this occured after the latest update (which is actually four updates). I removed all four updates and the right click latest file function is still not there.

The update was: March 25, 2025-KB5055063 Cumulative Update for .NET Framework 3.5, 4.8 and 4.8.1 for Windows 10 Version 22H2 - Microsoft Support

The first update removed as listed is KB5054978. I lost track of the other 3 updates installed at the same time.

THIS IS THE EXACT MAIN REASON I WOULDN'T GO TO WINDOWS 11!!!! I'll be glad when there are no more win10 updates!

How do I get this right click function back? Below is the menu I get when I now right click on a pinned start menu, program:

Windows for home | Windows 10 | Windows update

Apparently, the jumplist issue is now officially documented as a known issue.

    • It's curious about the April 7, 2025 date when the updates were released on April 8.
    • If the updates are manually installed without being connected to the internet (KB5055683 and KB5055518 are in the catalog, KB5057589 can be downloaded while installing with Windows Update and then tried again), the error doesn't occur.
    • Sometimes, even without Windows Update finishing downloading the updates and without having any installed, just restarting during the download causes the error.

Conclusion: The three updates released on April 8 don't have any issues. It must be that Windows Update itself was updated internally on April 7, and there's a bug. These internal updates don't appear in the update history.

    Servicing Stack 10.0.19041.5676

    Chatgpt:

Windows Update can update internally without appearing in the update history as an update with a KB (Knowledge Base) identifier.

These internal updates affect the Windows Update client itself and sometimes maintenance system components (such as the Windows Update service, the installation engine, or the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS).

    Characteristics of these updates:
✅ They do not appear in the update history as KBxxxxx.

✅ They can be installed silently (without asking for permission or displaying a warning).

✅ They can change the behavior of the update system, including how future updates are downloaded and installed.

✅ They are sometimes recorded in Event Viewer or in internal log files (such as WindowsUpdate.log or CBS.log), but not in the usual Update History section.

✅ Some versions of these updates are called “Update Stack Packages” or “Servicing Stack Updates (SSU)” and may be packaged or disguised as part of other updates.

You have two options to fix it:

    • The easiest and quickest: Pin the icons of your most-used apps to the taskbar and you'll be able to use the jumplists again. In 2-3 days, you'll get used to using them there.
    • The slowest: Download the Windows 10 22H2 ISO, mount it by double-clicking it, DISCONNECT from the INTERNET, and run Setup. Windows will install itself without deleting any apps or personal files. When the installation is complete, block updates for the maximum period (35 days) and reconnect to the Internet.

Wow, that's quite an extensive list of updates that don't seem to cause the jumplist problem if installed manually.

I've been out of the hardware design and IT field for over 10 years and I'm now just a general user. I don't keep regular system backups nor was I aware of the IoT versions. I do see that Dell is a distributor of the IoT version and all of my remaining laptops are Dell; so ????

I find it interesting that another user only had the KB5055518 update and uninstalling that solved the problem. I had more combined updates then that. I can't get back to the jumplist working from the Startup menu at this moment :/

I can't access the feeback hub link above (?because it is for your userid?). There is one upvote now so you must have found it. You (Clent) must have more power than I as I cannot see any "Status" of this feeback.
