Win 11 Version 24H2 Install Failed

I tried to install Win 11 Version 24H2 for the second time, and it failed for a second time. The first BSOD message gave the following info:

Your device ran into a problem and needs to restart.

Stop code: INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE

After a couple of restarts, the update was backed out. I'm back on Windows 11 Pro Version 23H2.

I checked the update history and saw the Install error code - 0xc1900101.

Before I tried the 24H2 update, I did the following:

Unplug unnecessary USB devices

Drivers were updated

No issues in Device Manager

I have 30GB of free space on the drive

Any help would be appreciated,

    Hi sms1295,

    Please try this fix list, which removes the rest of the third-party drivers. It's more aggressive, and I'd not run it without backing up the registry.

    1. Backup the registry using Acelogix.
    2. Run this fixlist.txt. Share fixlog.txt.

    Note: It removes the Corsair HID drivers and other drivers. I'm not sure if it makes the Kbd/Mouse inoperable. In that case, you can attach a standard keyboard or revert to the previous registry backup via WinRE.

    1. There are the programs we've not touched so far. They all add drivers. You can consider removing them.

    Core Temp 1.18.1

    Corsair Device Control Service

    Corsair iCUE5 Software

    CPUID CPU-Z 2.15

    Intel® Driver & Support Assistant

    Revo Uninstaller 2.5.8

    Restart Windows.

    Remain in clean boot mode.

    1. Run VSS Doctor to see if it can determine the reason for the VSS error.
    1. Reset the Defender platform and update it again. Here are the commands:
    • "C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MpCmdRun.exe" -ResetPlatform
    • "C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MpCmdRun.exe" -SignatureUpdate
    1. Post the latest Farbar logs.

    Ramesh,

    Thanks for the info. I tried the Windows reset option, and it failed too. I received the same error as the tries with the 24H2 upgrade. I also ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic, and the results showed no issues. I have a program called _MemTest86-Pro, which I'll run over the weekend to double check. Any other tools I should run to check for 0xC0000005 errors?

    BTW...I'm not going to do the clean install until next week, so I get everything ready to reinstall.

    Hi sms1295,

    1. I'm unsure if reinstalling 23H2 and upgrading to 24H2 will help because 0xC1900101 is mostly a driver-related (and sometimes hardware-related) issue. But you could try that, considering that the repair installation shouldn't take much time on SSDs.

    By the way, I noticed that some drivers were automatically added every time you reverted from clean boot mode after the failed setup attempt. The first one was added by the Intel Driver utility and the gdrv3.sys driver was installed by a Gigabyte service.

    1. I prefer installing programs on the C drive and moving the data files (Documents, Desktop, Music, Videos, Downloads) to the other partition or drive. Separating the data reduces the size of the image when backing up the OS partition. I backup the OS partition using Macrium. Data files will be backed up using a robocopy batch file to an external drive and NAS.
    2. Unused and superseded driver store packages can be removed using the Pnpclean command we used earlier. Altenatively the Windows Assessment Toolkit from Microsoft can do the job. However, there is no tool to identify invalid drivers (vs driver store packages). It has to be done manually using a tool like FRST.
