Unusual Files in C Drive After FAILED Windows Update Attempts!

Just wanted to give it a fair go one more time by trying to fix problems myself, but still a major failure with Windows Updates.

Also, there doesn't seem to be any issues with the PC itself that I can find using what is available - it really does seem to be corrupt Window Updates.

Error Code: 0x80070057

Reset was done back in February, but didn't work. The only Antivirus third party programs on it before then was Kaspersky and AVG.

AVG was removed in the last part of 2024 and then reintroduced after the reset then removed again when told to remove everything by Microsoft Support.

Current Anti-virus is disabled.

Over the last 48 hours:

a: Scannow came back clean.

b: Chkdsk found nothing.

c: DISM also didn't resolve any issues as none found.

d: Ample storage in C Drive like 500 GBs.

e: Managed to rename SoftwareDistribution folders after the net stop ... net start steps, but made no difference.

f: Troubleshooter had pending restart at first, but since then troubleshooter detects no issues.

g: Have manually downloaded the updates from February and April (can't find anything for March) only these won't install either.

h: With Windows Update ERROR ENCOUNTERED does come up and Troubleshooter still detects nothing.

i: No malware or anything as that was checked prior via someone in the Microsoft Community and I still do checks myself.

j: Under RegEdit after exporting changed the values to 0 for Window Update Ux like:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsUpdate\UX]

"IsConvergedUpdateStackEnabled"=dword:00000000

h: Diskcheckup found no issues.

On checking C Drive about the storage space as I was wondering if maybe I was missing something**,** just in case, I discovered these folders or files and was wondering if my PC is now compromised or these are a tell tale sign of Windows Update being corrupted or Other as these have only appeared in the last 6 hours or so.

NOTE: Will be doing a clean install at some point, but not just yet as need to copy some stuff over that I want to keep and as it may take several hours...

There is one or two others like below as well and all dated the same.

Hi Min,

The last two are not standard Windows Update error codes.

Which updates are causing those errors?

Please post a screenshot.

If you are talking about KB5056577 and KB5056578 they successfully installed and belong to KB5057056.

However, on Windows Update it still has that KB5057056 isn't successfully installed and has failed to install.

The two main cumulative files right now that Windows Update is failing to update are:

KB5057056 (0x80070057)

KB5058379 (0x80070057)

However, I managed to manually do it for KB5057056.

The other one - found it! I think.

Am about to try and manually download and install this one and will update on what happens.

Now, the one below is for a security update and also failed - it was the one that got stuck at 1/8 along the bar.

Seems I may not need to update this one from Feb as Windows Update finds what is needed, right? So no need to go back in months.

1. I can't find more information about KB5049982. Please post a screenshot of the errors you're getting.
2. You can download kb5058379 from this link:

If that doesn't work, please upload your CBS logs to OneDrive or GoFile.io and share the link here. To collect the CBS logs, open admin PowerShell and run:

GCI -Path 'c:\windows\logs\cbs\*.*', 'c:\windows\inf\setupapi.dev.log' | Compress-Archive -destination (join-path ([environment]::GetFolderPath('Desktop')) \CBS.zip)
```

That was a typo - sorry.

Did correct it as I couldn't find it either going back in and on double checking I realised I had mistakenly typed 2 instead of 1.

I have downloaded that KB file and it isn't an exe file, but CAB. CAB I have never dealt with before - ever.

I did follow this RegEdit suggestion to change the key only my CAB folder doesn't have SHELL to add anything so that it is automatically done each time.

That seemed like the easiest option and one that could actually be understood.

On right clicking there is no option to install either and this may be because it is Zip or compressed.

I have seen instructions for DSIM(?), but I don't want to spend hours and hours dealing with errors and issues because I did see what others have experienced going down that path.

What would you suggest?

Is it possible that Windows Update might come around by itself because this CAB thing needs someone that is an IT programmer not someone that only uses PCs to watch YT and Netflix.

1. The link I provided is for a .msu file, not a .cab file.
2. Post screenshots of the error, as requested already.
3. If the .msu doesn't install, share the CBS logs.
