An InPlace upgrade is done when the system is running Windows unlike reinstallation. It fixes most issues like update issues, corrupted system files like Defender's, etc. You don't have to use USB for an InPlace upgrade.
To do it, download Media Creation Tool from here: https://microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
Run it, click Upgrade this PC now, choose to keep all files.
