Windows 11 New Media Player

Hello!

I used Groove Music.

Today, I received the new Media Player which replaced Groove Music.

It correctly found my music and videos as I have included them in the Libraries.

Unfortunately, it is buggy.

For instance, when I click on Artists, it says that it could not find any content.

Also, it stucks when I click on an artist or album

Do you have similar issues?

Should I just wait a little bit, maybe they are going to provide updates and fixes?

I have tried resetting the app 2 times, but still the same problems.

EDIT [19.5.2022]: There was some improvements in my experience with Media Player.

Some day ago, the Media Player started anew. FIrst, it scanned again from scratch my Music library.

For 5-10 minutes, it used a lot of CPU and RAM. Then when it was done, I could see the Artists and it did not say that it couldnt find any music.

But still it is not completely stable. Very often, when I click on an Album or Artist, it freezes or crashes.

So, still I am anxiously waiting if it will get stable in the future.

But for now, I am happy that I can listen to music again.

DId this update also happen to you?

EDIT [11.9.2022]: Overall, my experience with Media Player has improved a lot.

Now, I can play all my music.

There are now 3 issues remaining as I can see them at least:

  1. Often, when I click to play an album, it freezes. I have to close and restart the app, and then I can play the same album. The same album appears when I click on the Home link.
  2. I also noticed this error: The run times of albums and others, are wrong! They do not show the actual value as I inspected them.
  3. Unfortunately, and this has not been addresses to me so far, I do not have Artists art. Wherever there is an artist, it just shows nothing. In Groove Music, I used to have those and they were beautiful.

    From a user standpoint, this is a gigantic fail. I tried to create a playlist by using drag and drop. No way. So, I decided to add the playlist folder from media player/Win10. The playlists show up but nothing plays with a big fat error that they can't play this file (mp3). So, I thought I'd start over and delete the playlist. I get a message that the playlist has been deleted but it just sits there. The playlists, under any circumstance, do not appear to be editable. So, for all intents and purposes I have this thing with limited functionality (if you click on the album, or song, or artist you can get something to play) under music library tab. Most likely the database is corrupted and there's no way back. I'll have to try to delete it and find a music player that actually lets you import playlists (there doesn't appear to be any option to do this). The MS QA people must not have had a big hand, or were overruled, when they rolled this thing out.

    Interesting. I kept rebuilding and rebuilding the database but it always failed. Eventually a Microsoft tech support person talked me through a couple of steps which I had never heard of. It involved changing something in the app database which COMPLETELY cleared traves of the older installs.

    Eventually it just started working, but that might have been because they fixed the install files.

    What problem do you think mp3tag might have fixed? I use that myself to fix tags that are wrong or missing

    I have a possible solution to this problem. I tried deleting the database and letting Media Player rebuild it,. Now it's fine. I have been using David Kang's Windows Thumbnail Generator 3.0.1, which brings back folder thumbnails for Windows 11. It works OK, but I'm wondering if it's doing something to the EXIF data in .mp3 files. Florian Heidenreich's MP3tab seems to fix whatever the issue is.

    Does Microsoft monitor these threads? I genuinely don't get this.

     

    They probably don't, at least development wise. Your best bet is to report issues continually to the Feedback app. Recently Photos app was messed up and there was such a collective response on Feedback app, MS fixed the issue within two weeks.

    OK, looks like I was premature. Again. Media Player for Windows 11 has ceased to find music. It will look and look and then show one tile of Unknown Album. I’ve deleted and reinstalled several times to no avail. It is pointed to the correct location.

    The bizarre thing is that I had it open and updated an album in an MP3 data editor (MP3Tag). It immediately showed up in Media Player! So I tried updating everything in MP3Tag. A few more albums showed up, but can find neither rhyme nor reason as to why some show and most don't.

    Does Microsoft monitor these threads? I genuinely don't get this.
