Files have a brown box on their icon and dont open in Windows 11

What is going on here? There is no information anywhere so it obviously isnt a problem for everyone.

Most of my files stored on Dropbox now have a small brown file box icon on the lower left corner of the main icon for all MS Office files. They open perfectly well on the phone and a laptop running Windows 10 but not on my laptop running Windows 11.

I get an error message saying the program cant open it because the file is unsupported or may be corrupt.

Why the **** do they release an OS that doesn't work with their own programs??

    It isn't a Dropbox or Onedrive issue. Neither of of them are active on my computer and yet I have one folder which is showing the brown boxes. Just what is going on?

    Any further ideas?

    I found that Dropbox isn't automatically starting up anymore, so you have to start it up from the Start menu to sync to the cloud again. I don't use Onedrive for my backup. My issue is just that Dropbox wasn't on.

    But if you don't have Dropbox, I've no clue why you'd be seeing that icon.

    I just signed in to OneDrive and everything became normal,,,brown sign gone and files can download and open.

    I am having the same issue. I have used Krita for years. And just switched to a new computer.

    I cannot open any files, they all have a brown box, and worse, I can't import brushes that I have had for years.

    I too had the same problem,

    The problem is that some folders are synced with OneDrive, so if OneDrive isn't active when you start your computer and you try to open those files, they won't download properly.

    To fix it:

    1. Go to Apps > Startup and turn on OneDrive.
    2. Open OneDrive once. That's it!

    I have this problem too. This problem was reported in Feb 2022! I've had this problem for months and it's April 2024. Surely Micosoft windows 11 should have this problem sorted by now?? This is very frustrating :(
