How to adjust Bass and Treble in Windows 11?

If you are playing a video or listening to audio keep in mind most decent players (like VLC) come with equalizers. So if you have a universal one make sure both aren't running unless you need precisely that. It's better to always start with each equalizer set flat, then DECREASE what you find objectionable. The reason for this is a room always accentuates certain frequencies (not applicable for headphone use of course) by standing waves that reverberate depending on the distance between parallel walls. So to correct that you aim to decrease the level at those very points. Now obviously a graphic equalizer is a very poor tool for this as it goes by octave usually (frequencies double for each octave) so what's the chance your standing waves will coincide with the one point they chose? Its approximate. So if you care, hunt down a parametric equalizer that will allow you to adjust both the level AND frequency. This is really the only intelligent way to control your sound. And if you go parametric you probably won't need many bands. After all, how many parallel walls do you have? Most of us have just 2 pairs. So we really should need only 2 bands.

How to determine the frequency your parallel walls are affecting? Use real time analyzer software with a half decent mic not designed for close range. Keep in mind mics built into cell phones are laughable in their attempt at realistically recording anything. But don't worry, it won't cost much. Maybe you can borrow one. The software will generate noise at all frequencies, much like the noise you would hear on an FM radio between stations with the muting off. We usually refer to this as "fuzz". The mic will pick that up and the software will show you what frequencies are being amplified by those parallel walls. This is called real time analysis. Before computers were mainstream people would use an expensive real time analyzer to generate the "fuzz" then compare it to what the mic reproduced. This could probably be accomplished with even a phone with a decent external mic. There's probably "an app for that".

For the bass/subwoofers it's different. Here the room interferes in so many different ways it's best to just experiment. The first rule is a bass driver should never be near a wall, especially a corner if you want clean bass. That just amplifies the bass but makes it cloudy and ill defined. And it should almost never be flat on the floor. That's why spikes are used often. Bass is not really directional below about 100 hz (about 2 octaves below the middle of the piano's A which is 440 hz. This allows us to use a single subwoofer. Quality powered subwoofers tend to use servo control so a sensor monitors the movement of the driver.

What I find odd is the audiophile crowd is often not really into computers and the computer crowd is rarely into quality sound. Yet both are rather technical. For some reason these two rarely mix. Neither seem to want to acknowledge the other! Yet they both can hugely enhance each other.
